history

antiquity

Traces of settlement in today's local area are already from around 5000 BC. Has been proven.

In Roman times (2nd / 3rd century AD) Sontheim was a road junction with an extensive rest stop and a small temple, which excavations in the 1990s revealed; it was at the crossroads of the streets from Günzburg (lat. Guntia ) to Heidenheim (lat. Aquileia ) and the north Danube road from Fort Urspring (lat. Ad Lunam ) to Regensburg (lat. Castra Regina ). In 2002, on the latter road between Sontheim and Bächingen, an almost complete milestone donated by Emperor Caracalla , broken in two, with a reference to Faimingen (Latin: Phoebiana ) was discovered.

middle Ages

Sontheim was already a sizable settlement under the Alemanni, as indicated by numerous row grave finds. Particularly noteworthy is the discovery of a sheet silver cross with a depiction of Christ from the 7th century (today in the Stuttgart State Museum). The present-day village emerged from a later Alemannic settlement (around 800), which was laid out further south; This was founded with high probability from Brenz in the north , which is indicated by the former church affiliation of Sontheim to Brenz and the naming ( Sontheim means something like south home ).

Sontheim was first mentioned in a document in 1002 on the occasion of King Heinrich II's stay , which explains Sontheim's location on the Staufer road . In the late Middle Ages, a lower nobility family resided in Sontheim, who named themselves after the place; from the middle of the 15th century, all trace of it is lost. The rule fell to the Counts of Helfenstein ; In 1448 they were acquired by the Counts of Württemberg , but soon lost to Bavaria. It was not until 1504 that the rule of Heidenheim and the Sontheim incorporated into it were again part of Württemberg.

Modern times

During the Schmalkaldic War in October 1546 the camp of Emperor Charles V was in Sontheim.

From 1558 the Duchy of Württemberg carried out the Reformation in Sontheim, which broke away from the Catholic mother church in Brenz. Since then, the congregation has been predominantly Protestant. The Thirty Years' War also hit Sontheim hard, especially the Bavarian attack in 1620. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Georgskirche was given its present form.

In 1704, the French used Sontheim as their headquarters before the battle of Höchstädt .

In 1791 the Sontheim town council bought the historical Aussiedlerhof Schwarzenwang to the south from Freiherr vom Stain zu Niederstotzingen , which enabled the community to expand its area considerably.

Sontheim belonged to the old Württemberg office of Heidenheim and, when the new administrative structure was implemented in the Kingdom of Württemberg , which had existed since 1806, continued to be assigned to the now upper office of Heidenheim .

The elongated street village continued to develop, primarily due to the “ population explosion ” in the 19th century.

During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Sontheim came to the Heidenheim district in 1938. Since the place had become part of the American occupation zone after the Second World War , it had belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden since 1945 , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Today Sontheim is one of the largest communities in the Brenz Valley.
