St. Valery en Caux

Saint-Valery-en-Caux is a French municipality with 4006 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy . It is located on the Alabaster Coast , part of the French Channel coast. It is the capital of the Pays de Caux, the capital of the canton of the same name .

geography

The municipality is located 30 kilometers from the ports of Dieppe and Fécamp . Steep chalk cliffs rise to the east and west of the town. In addition to fishing boats, the sheltered harbor is home to yachts in particular.

history

The place was first mentioned in 990 as the property of the Benedictine Abbey of Fécamp.

During the Second World War , the British 51st (Highland) Division, encircled by German troops, capitulated here in 1940 . Large parts of the town were destroyed in the course of the war. On January 17, 1945, a serious railway accident occurred in Saint-Valery-en-Caux : The station in Saint-Valery-en-Caux formed the end of the line and was thus a terminus . A train ran over to the track final buffer . 84 people died, 226 were also injured.

  • The half-timbered Maison Henri IV at the harbor dates back to 1540 and houses a museum and a tourist information office.
  • A small lighthouse at the harbor entrance dates from 1872.

Monuments

On the eastern cliff, a memorial stone commemorates the British 51st (Highland) Infantry Division. Another memorial commemorates Dieudonné Costes and his co-pilot who flew over the town on September 2, 1930 on the route from Paris to New York .

Economy and Infrastructure

Today tourism is one of the most important sources of economic income. The Paluel nuclear power plant is located six kilometers southwest of the town .
