Le Tréport is a commune with 4870 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Seine-Maritime department in the region of Normandy . The inhabitants call themselves Tréportais .

location

The city is on the coast of the English Channel, at the mouth of the Bresle in a gap in the rocky coast. In places the city is wedged between the sea and the rocks. A staircase leads to the plateau. Since 2006 there has been a new inclined elevator on the route of the funicular, which opened in 1908, from the lower town to the housing estate above the rocks.

Inland the next town is Eu . Mers-les-Bains is just on the other side of the Bresle .

history

The city was mentioned in documents as Ulteris portus and Ultris portum in 1059. The name is said to derive from the late Latin name * Ultrensis portus "the outer harbor". The inner harbor was further inland near today's city of Eu .

Above the coastal cliffs of the city, a larger city for tourism was to be built before the First World War . At that time the hotel "Trianon" was built there. The First World War ruined the plans. Today there is a modern housing estate in this area. The remains of a funicular , which led through a tunnel across the chalk cliffs from the beach to the plateau, also date from this time .

During the Second World War , numerous bunkers against the Allied invasion were also built here by the German side . Even in the hinterland there are bunkers with an inland firing direction. A bunker, the so-called " Kahlburg ", was built into the chalk cliffs . The “Trianon” hotel was blown up.

traffic

Tréport - Mers station is the terminus of the railway line coming from Épinay - Villetaneuse (near Paris) via Eu . It was put into operation in 1872 and is right on the border with the neighboring municipality of Mers-les-Bains , which is why it has had its double name since 1887. It is served by regional trains of the TER Haute-Normandie and TER Picardie , although only about two trips per day are served by multiple units, otherwise regional buses (autocars). Long-distance traffic was discontinued.

From 1902 to 1934 the meter-gauge tram Tramway d'Eu-Le Tréport-Mers connected Le Tréport, Eu and Mers with each other.

The 1908 opened Funicular Funiculaire du Tréport led from the village on the plateau above the White Cliffs. Already after the First World War it proved to be not very profitable and was not put into operation again after 1945. In 2006 a first inclined elevator was built on its route and expanded in 2008. His guided tour in a tunnel with a double portal into the rock face is remarkable. The cable car also served as a location for the crime series "Les témoins" (Eng. The Witnesses ), which was first broadcast on French television in 2015.

economy

Tourism is the predominant industry. The city is known for its numerous fish restaurants.
