Criel-sur-Mer is a commune with 2,680 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Seine-Maritime department in the region of Normandy . In terms of the area of ​​the municipality, it is the largest municipality in the canton of Eu . It has been awarded the Blue Flag eco-label .

Criel-sur-Mer is located on the English Channel , 101 kilometers northeast of Le Havre , 20 kilometers northeast of Dieppe , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement and 8.1 kilometers southwest of Eu , the capital of the canton. Neighboring municipalities of Criel-sur-Mer are Flocques in the northeast and Touffreville-sur-Eu in the southeast. history

In 1846, the archaeologist Jean Benoît Désiré Cochet found remains of buildings, statues and everyday objects from the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) during excavations in Criel-sur-Mer .

Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier (1627–1693), founded a hospital and orphanage in the Briançon manor in 1685 . The building was used as a hospital until 1955. In 1930 the mansion was entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques and thus protected as a historical monument . The building has served as a mairie since 1972 .

The Chantereine Castle

In 1872 a train station was built between Touffreville-sur-Eu and Criel-sur-Mer. He was hit by trains on the Dieppe - Eu line. The station was mainly used to send round pebbles that were collected on the cliffs all over the world. Towards the end of the 19th century there was an upswing in the community. Hotels, villas and casinos were built on the beaches. During the Second World War (1939-1945) most of the buildings were destroyed. After the war, families built second homes to spend their seaside holidays. The seigneurial Chantereine Castle was transformed into a youth hostel in 1984 and also houses the community's associations.

The parish belongs to the Roman Catholic community of Criel-sur-Mer , which is part of the parish of Saint-Michel de Eu sur Bresle et Yères of the Archdiocese of Rouen .

The Saint-Aubin church was built in the 14th century. Their patron saint is Aubin von Angers . In 1474 the church was almost completely destroyed by the troops of Charles the Bold . Only a chapel on one arm of the transept remained. In 1508 the church was rebuilt. In 1573 the church was badly damaged again in the course of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) and in 1605 it was restored. In 1819 lightning struck the building. The damage was repaired between 1863 and 1890. The church was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1930 . In the church there is a wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child from the 14th century and a statue of Saint Léonard (also Léodowald) by Avranches from the 16th century. The sculptures were classified as Monuments historiques in 1972 . The church's confessional dates from the 17th or 18th century and was classified as a monument historique in 1982 .
