geography

Smermesnil is located in the Norman part of the Pays de Bray landscape on a plateau between the Yeres and Eaulne rivers, which flow parallel to the English Channel , about 30 kilometers east-southeast of the coastal town of Dieppe . Fields and meadows characterize the 12.81 km² area with little forest. There are no surface rivers on the clayey soil. On the eastern edge of the community area there is a wind farm about five kilometers long. The hamlets of Lignemare, La Leuqueue, Houppelande (partially) and Crimont belong to Smermesmil . Smermesnil is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Preuseville in the north, Callengeville in the east and southeast, Clais in the south, Bailleul-Neuville in the southwest, Saint-Pierre-des-Jonquières in the west and Puisenval in the northwest. Four kilometers to the east, Smermesnil has a connection to the A28 autoroute .

history

The history of Smermesnil is closely related to that of its castle. From the end of the 19th century it was used as an orphanage and later as a rural household center. A Catholic school has been located on the castle grounds since the 1980s. From 1906 until the closure in 1947 there was a stop in Smermesnil on the branch line Amiens  - Aumale  - Envermeu . During the Second World War, an Allied bombardment during Operation Crossbow on December 23, 1943 resulted in 14 deaths. In 1823 the previously independent municipalities of Lignemare and La Leuqueue were incorporated into the municipality of Smermesnil.
