It belongs to the Arrondissement of Dieppe and the canton of Luneray (until 2015 canton of Tôtes ). The inhabitants are called Varnevillais .

Varneville-Bretteville is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Vaast-du-Val in the north and north-west, Tôtes in the north, Saint-Maclou-de-Folleville in the north-east, Fresnay-le-Long in the east, Le Houssaye-Bérenger in the south-east, Beautot in the south, Gueutteville in the west and Bertrimont in the west and northwest.
