Arques-la-Bataille is a commune with 2,583 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Seine-Maritime department in the region of Normandy . Administratively it belongs to the Arrondissement Dieppe and is part of the canton Dieppe-2 (until 2015: canton Offranville ). The inhabitants are called Arquais .
geography
Arques-la-Bataille is a few kilometers south of the Alabaster Coast on the English Channel . Here the rivers Béthune , Eaulne and Varenne converge in the Arques , which flows a few kilometers north into the English Channel. Arques-la-Bataille is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Martin-Église in the north, Ancourt in the northeast, Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont in the east, Saint-Aubin-le-Cauf and Martigny in the southeast, Aubermesnil-Beaumais in the south, Tourville- sur-Arques in the southwest, Saint-Aubin-sur-Scie in the west and northwest and Rouxmesnil-Bouteilles in the northwest.
history
Arques was first mentioned in a document in 750. The village was given its nickname in 1882 because of the Battle of Arques from September 15 to 29, 1589. During the Huguenot Wars , the Protestant King Henry IV managed to defeat the Catholic League here despite being numerically inferior. The Cistercian Abbey of Arques was located here from 1636 to 1791 .
