history

Tikhvin was first mentioned in 1383 and has had city rights since 1773.

Tikhvin is internationally known because of the composer Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow , who was born there in 1844, and the Tikhvin icon . According to legend, the icon was painted by Luke while Mary was still alive .

During the Second World War , the city was conquered by troops of the German Army Group North in November 1941 in the Battle of Tikhvin , but had to be evacuated after a month because the Soviet counterattacks were too strong. Tikhvin marked the furthest advance of Army Group North in the course of the entire war. After the fall of Tikhvin, the then Commander-in-Chief of Army Group North, Field Marshal Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb, asked for his replacement. He had got into an argument with the new Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Adolf Hitler , about strategy: Hitler wanted to keep the front without regard to losses, Leeb wanted to lead the defense in a flexible manner and with the greatest possible sparing of his own troops. The Tübingen doctor and painter Georg Alfred Stockburger , who was deployed there as a battalion doctor, artistically dealt with the war crimes and the suffering of the Russian civilian population committed in the context of the conquest and loss of the city of Tikhvin.
