The Sjas ( Russian Сясь , Finnish Säsjoki ) is a tributary of Lake Ladoga in northwestern Russia .
It rises in the swamps below the western slope of the Valdai Heights in Novgorod Oblast . The river continues its course through Leningrad Oblast and flows into southern Lake Ladoga about 11 kilometers east of the Volkhov River . Near its mouth, it is directly connected to the Swir , Volkhov and Neva rivers by canals running parallel to the lakeshore (Old and New Ladoga Canal ) ; at its central reaches near Tikhvin it is connected to the Tikhvin canal system via canals . This creates a navigable connection to the Volga . The river forms a closed ice cover in the winter months, and it will be navigable again from April.
Its length is 260 kilometers with a catchment area of around 7330 km², its mean water flow at the lower reaches, 27 kilometers above the mouth, amounts to 53 m³ / s.
