Karl-Heinz "Charly" Neumann (born July 29, 1931 in Bochum ; † November 11, 2008 in Dorsten-Wulfen ) was a German restaurateur and trained baker. In public he was known as the team manager of FC Schalke 04 .

Life

In 1950 Neumann joined FC Schalke 04. Since then he has worked almost continuously for Schalke. At the same time he worked as a restaurateur, among other things, he managed Berge Castle in Gelsenkirchen-Buer. Neumann was youth leader until 1976 before he replaced Edmund "Ede" Lichterfeld as team manager. He sat next to coaches like Max Merkel and Friedel Rausch on the bench and was the contact person for the worries and needs of the fans. But he also showed a different side of himself in the 1970s when he overheard meetings of club bodies to find out what people thought of him. Pictures of Neumann weeping when he was relegated to the Bundesliga in the 1980s symbolized the decline of the traditional club at that time. His engagement was only interrupted by an argument with Rudi Assauer , which temporarily cost him his job in the eighties. In 1986 he applied for the office of President, but withdrew his application so that Günter Siebert could be elected. Since the 1990s he was less active in the Schalke committees, but outwardly embodied the "old" Schalke of the Glückaufkampfbahn era nostalgically and continued to generate material for numerous anecdotes.

Weakened by two strokes, Charly Neumann died on November 11, 2008 with his family. On November 18, he was buried with great sympathy in the main cemetery in Gelsenkirchen-Buer . Before the first game after his death, the entire FC Schalke 04 team named "Charly" was on the jersey.

honors and awards

Neumann has been a member of the honorary committee of FC Schalke 04 since 2003.

In July 2006, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, a bridge at the Veltins Arena was named after him.

On June 28, 2009 Neumann was elected to the Schalke dressing room at the club's annual general meeting . This makes him the first member of the dressing room who was not active for the club as a player or coach.
