Wulfen is a district of Dorsten in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Recklinghausen .

geography

location

Wulfen is located on the southern edge of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland nature park in the transition from the Ruhr area to the Münsterland .

For a hard coal mine with a planned 8,000 employees, the new town of Wulfen for 50,000 inhabitants was planned in the 1960s with the involvement of Alt- Wulfen . The sub-area, which was realized until 1990, now forms the district of Wulfen-Barkenberg.

Local division

Wulfen consists of Alt-Wulfen and Wulfen-Barkenberg.

history

The church of St. Matthew , which was later renovated many times, still has a testimony to the medieval history of the village with its baptismal font from the first half of the 13th century. The Drosten von Wulfheim originally resident here were enfeoffed with Vischering Castle in 1271 and have been called Droste zu Vischering ever since .

Wulfen was incorporated into the city of Dorsten on January 1, 1975 .

Deut and Sölten have belonged to the municipality of Wulfen at least since the Napoleonic era and have been a separate district of Deuten since 1978.

Population development

In Alt-Wulfen there have been around 5400 inhabitants for a long time, in Wulfen-Barkenberg the number of inhabitants has fallen from the high of 12,500 in 1995 to less than 10,000. After the Second World War, the place saw a steady influx of people, including refugees from Silesia, and after the construction of the Wulfen colliery in the 1960s, also of workers from the nearby Ruhr area.

Attractions

The catholic parish church St. Matthäus and the shopping center Am Brauturm with its tower are worth seeing . The restaurant run by top chef Frank Rosin can also be found in Wulfen .

economy

The shaft of the Wulfen colliery was closed and completely removed around the turn of the millennium, so that the largest employer in town was canceled. In addition to various small businesses, there are the Kleinken metal works , the Berding concrete works , the Humbert company (including building materials trade) and Hötten Maschinenbau GmbH . In autumn 2005, the Am Brauturm shopping center was opened on the site of the former Rose Brewery, which had been fallow for years . Another shopping center was on Wulfener Markt, which has been empty for several years. (As of 2015) A smaller shopping center was built right next to it. There are 2 grocery stores, 1 drugstore, 1 tobacco and lottery shop, 1 shoe shop, 1 clothing shop and 1 bistro.

traffic

The busy B 58 leads through Wulfen , on which one reaches the A 43 in an easterly direction and the A 31 in a westerly direction . The first plans for a bypass have existed since 1911, but have not yet been implemented for various reasons. Crossing a railway line poses a problem, among other things, as a bridge would require special noise protection measures, and on the other hand the high groundwater level does not allow a possible tunnel to be created easily.

Bus routes operated by Vestische Straßenbahnen GmbH:

The Wulfen (Westphalia) station is classified in station category 6 and is served by the regional train RB 45 Der Coesfelder ( Dorsten – Coesfeld) in the NRW cycle . Since the timetable change in December 2006, the NordWestBahn has been using local passenger transport with diesel multiple units of the Bombardier Talent type .

Surroundings

About three kilometers northwest of Wulfen is Lembeck Castle , which is considered one of the most beautiful moated castles in the Münsterland.

Sports

The dance sport club TSZ Royal Wulfen became German champion in jazz modern dance in 1996. In basketball played BSV Wulfen from the 2010/2011 season until the 2012/2013 season in the northern group of the 2. Bundesliga Pro B .
