St. Matthew

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Matthäus is a listed church building in Wulfen , a district of Dorsten in the Recklinghausen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The original parish of St. Matthew is one of the oldest churches in the diocese of Münster . However, nothing remains of the first church buildings. A chronicle reports that there had been three construction periods before the Thirty Years' War . The building has been renewed and changed over and over again over the centuries. The choir and the sacristy in Gothic style were built between 1744 and 1745. The nave was built in 1823 and 1825, the tower in 1854. The east choir was enlarged in 1863. Except for the choir and tower, the entire building was destroyed in a bomb attack in March 1945. The architect and builder of the new church was Bernd Kösters from Münster. He presented the first plans in mid-1947. He moved the new ship to the north, including the choir and the tower in the new building. The dimensions have been increased to the west and east beyond the old floor plan. A sacristy was set up in the choir. The font is in the tower.

Furnishing

  • The mighty Romanesque font dates from the first half of the 13th century. It is decorated with palmettes and vine leaf friezes made from face masks and animal grimaces .
  • A large, expressive baroque cross shows a body with an open mouth. It is extremely fine and differentiated. For centuries it hung in the choir above the altar until the church was destroyed in 1945. The body was badly damaged by the bombing. Later it got a place in the baptistery .
  • The Pietà is the most valuable figure. The Vespers picture from the early 15th century is a work of the beginning soft style , it shows Mary enthroned in a steep posture, on her knees Christ taken down from the cross.
  • A way of the cross from bronze plaques was made in 1972 by the sculptor Heinrich-Gerd Bucker from Vellern
  • In the baptistery there is a figure of John the Baptist . It dates from the 17th century; it used to stand on the pulpit roof of the old church.
