Friedel Rausch (born February 27, 1940 in Duisburg ; † November 18, 2017 in Horw , Canton Lucerne , Switzerland ) was a German football player and coach.

Career as a player

From 1957 to 1962 Rausch played for the upper division Meidericher SV before moving to the league competitor FC Schalke 04 for the 1962/63 season, which was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga the following year . After Schalke had reached a midfield position in the first year , it was only just able to avoid relegation in the following seasons. One of the few bright spots during this period was winning the Coppa delle Alpi in 1968.

With the 1968/69 season, Schalke's performance improved noticeably: While the team was able to place itself in the middle of the league, the DFB Cup made it into the final, where they ultimately lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich . Since Bayern were also champions at the same time, Schalke was allowed to compete in the European Cup Winners' Cup . There the "miners" could only be stopped in the semi-finals of Manchester City .

After the 1970/71 season , Rausch ended his active football career. He had previously played his last game on matchday 32 against the later relegated Kickers Offenbach .

Career as a coach

After the end of his playing career, he became a coach at Schalke 04, first in youth teams and then as an assistant to Max Merkel . In March 1976 he became head coach of the team and reached the runner-up with her in the 1976/77 season . After his dismissal from Schalke 04 in December 1977, he remained unemployed until he was hired by Eintracht Frankfurt as the new head coach in January 1979 . Under intoxication, Eintracht won the UEFA Cup in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1979/80 season .

For the 1980/81 season Rausch moved to Turkey to Fenerbahçe Istanbul , where he vacated his post after almost two years to go to the Netherlands for MVV Maastricht in 1982 . This intermezzo lasted only one year and thus just as long as his subsequent activity from 1983 to 1984 at the Greek club Iraklis Thessaloniki .

His time at FC Luzern , where he had been head coach since 1985, was significantly more successful than at other foreign clubs . With Lucerne he won the Swiss football championship in 1988/89 and in 1992 the Swiss Cup . After he missed promotion in the 1992/93 season as head coach of the second division club FC Basel , Rausch returned to the Bundesliga for 1. FC Kaiserslautern .

With the "Red Devils" he won the runner-up in 1994 and reached fourth place in the league the following year. However, after the top performers Ciriaco Sforza and Stefan Kuntz had left the club for the 1995/96 season , the crash followed. Rausch was dismissed nine game days before the end of the season and the following relegation of the Lauterer to the second division . After a year as head coach at the Austrian representative LASK Linz , he was able to prevent the club from relegating to the second division as a coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the late phase of the 1997/98 season . After a disastrous half series in the following season , Rausch was released in November 1998. He found a new job at 1. FC Nürnberg in January 1999, but after a dramatic season finale he was relegated to the second division with the club.

After Rausch's activity in Nuremberg had ended in February 2000, he returned to Eintracht Frankfurt as a manager . In April 2001 he took over the position of head coach at the club until the end of the season , but could no longer prevent Eintracht's relegation to the 2nd division and ended his engagement there.

After almost three years of unemployment, Rausch took up his last position as team manager at FC Luzern in March 2004 , which he held until the end of the 2005/06 season .

Oddities

On September 6, 1969, during the Borussia Dortmund district derby against Schalke 04, a police dog bit him in the buttocks. The team doctor gave him a tetanus shot, and Rausch played on until the end.

Friedel Rausch passed away on November 18, 2017.
