Revierderby

Placements in the Bundesliga table

In the broader sense, the Revierderby is the meeting of two sports clubs from the Ruhr area . In the Ruhr area, coal mining used to be practiced on a large scale and mining districts are also known as Reviere , which is why the term Revier has become a synonym for the Ruhr Area. In a narrower sense, the term includes games between the two largest and most fan-rich soccer clubs in Westphalia , Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 . The rivalry between Dortmund and Schalke has grown historically and has become part of the respective urban self-image. It goes far beyond the actual sporting competition. One reason for this is the geographical proximity (around 30 kilometers) of the cities in the district and the fact that the supporters of the respective clubs often meet each other on a daily basis, which increases the tension before and after a derby. With 179 clashes, it is one of the most common football derbies in Germany.

backgrounds

The fans on the south stand of the Westfalenstadion cheer on their team in the Revierderby.

Despite the large number of football clubs in the Ruhr area and the corresponding number of local derbies in the higher leagues, the games between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 have recently turned out to be the district derbies. This is why this encounter is often referred to in the accompanying media coverage as “The mother of all derbies”.

The games between the two most successful clubs in the region have been sold out for many years and inspire football fans in the area like no other duels. In contrast to major international derbies such as Old Firm or El Superclásico , the rivalry between the two clubs is as young as it is peaceful - it was only after the Second World War that Borussia became a competitor on an equal footing for the Gelsenkirchen team, and the club's stories are not as different as that religious or ideological conflicts between the two clubs could have developed. Both Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund were created in working-class districts and have had an integrative function for the many East Prussian and Polish immigrants from the start . Even if there are supporters from all social classes today, the clubs continue to symbolize heart and passion as virtues of football in the “Ruhrpott”.

After three games between the two clubs in the mid-1920s, the first clashes at a higher level came from 1936 in the Gauliga , after BVB had made promotion. At that time, however, Schalke 04 was decisive for football in the entire empire and accordingly without competition in the area, so that the Gelsenkirchen team were mostly able to win the games without much difficulty. Due to the great differences in the strength of the teams, there was initially no real rivalry between the two clubs; after the first Schalke championship in 1934, for example, the train of the championship team in Dortmund main station was cheered frenetically. From there, the “miners” were escorted to the town hall, where they entered the Golden Book.

Overall, BVB lost 14 out of 16 games against Schalke in the Gauliga; even in 1937/38 and 1941/42, when BVB was second in the west behind series winner Schalke, the Gelsenkirchen team were not beaten. The only victory before the end of the war was a 1-0 win in October 1943, in which August Lenz was Dortmund's first national player to score the decisive goal. After the end of the war, however, BVB developed into a serious opponent for Schalke 04. Borussia Dortmund won the first game in this period and in 1947 they won 3-2 in Westphalia. During the Oberliga West , the dominant team was replaced; Dortmund became champions three times and also took first place in the "eternal table" ahead of Schalke.

These years are considered to be the origin of the Revier derby, because it was only with Borussia Dortmund that a club was able to establish itself as a serious competitor to Schalke 04 in Ruhr area football in the long term. Since then, the times of success have alternated on both sides, with Dortmund more often in front. BVB was the top German team in the 1960s and 1990s and was more successful than S04 in the 1980s; Schalke was able to easily break away from Borussia in the 1970s and 2000s. Nevertheless, the games between the two clubs were always a special highlight. In many cases, the respective "underdog" was able to win the games. On the penultimate matchday of the 2006/07 season , FC Schalke 04 missed the championship with a 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund , whereby VfB Stuttgart took the lead and celebrated the championship at the end of the season. Conversely, Borussia Dortmund missed the championship in the 2018/19 season when they lost 4-2 in the Revierderby on matchday 31 against the Royal Blues at the same place ; At the end of the season, FC Bayern Munich became German champions.

Both clubs now have by far the most fans in the area and the surrounding area and apart from FC Bayern Munich , no club in Germany is able to keep up with Schalke and Dortmund in terms of spectator numbers. Regularly more than 40,000 (Schalke) or more than 50,000 (Dortmund) season tickets sold per season testify to the great enthusiasm of the fans. The Schalke “Nordkurve” and the “Südtribüne” in Dortmund (here also: the largest standing stand in Europe) reach the maximum for standing stands in Germany.

The goal scorers of the first games including the Gauligaspiele are taken from the book Das Revierderby Schalke / Dortmund by Joachim Schweer. The Oberliga goal scorers are taken from the book by Uwe Nuttelmann Oberliga West 1947–1963 . Some of the data deviate from the results database of schwatzgelb.de.

* Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 180th Revierderby had to be held without a spectator.

Players who played for both teams

Despite the competition between the clubs, some players were under contract with both clubs. 15 of the 28 players switched directly between the clubs. Two players ( Herbert Sandmann and Stan Libuda ) even switched directly between these clubs twice. The first “defector” was Franz Podgorski , who moved from Dortmund to Schalke in 1948. Former German national player Toni Schumacher worked for both clubs (S04 1992-1993, BVB 1995-1998) as a goalkeeper coach and during this time he had a short stint in the last insignificant Bundesliga match for Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund had already won the German championship in 1996 one match day earlier .

Oddities

  • On September 6, 1969, a police dog bit the Schalke player Friedel Rausch in the buttocks during the Ruhrpott classic Borussia Dortmund against Schalke 04 in the Rote Erde stadium . The team doctor gave him a tetanus shot, and Rausch played on until the end.
  • The 180th Revierderby on the 26th matchday of the 2019/20 season - like all other games until the end of the season - was played as a ghost game due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The season had previously been interrupted for around two months.
