Paul Matzkowski (born December 5, 1920 in Lyck , Masuria ; † May 12, 2004 in Gelsenkirchen ) was a German football player .

Life

Matzkowski was one of the many Masurians who came to Gelsenkirchen before and after the First World War. He played first in the youth of VfB Lohberg and then in the Gauliga Westfalen with Westfalia Herne in the Gauliga before he was drafted as a soldier during the Second World War . With 28 goals in the 1939/40 season, at the age of 19, he was the top scorer of the Gauliga Westphalia together with Schalke Hermann Eppenhoff and the top scorer of all Gauligen nationwide. In 1945 he returned to Westfalia Herne as a player and moved to FC Schalke 04 in 1948 , where he played as a striker until 1958 and later as a center runner . During his time at Schalke, he was champion in 1951 and runner-up in the Oberliga West in 1952 and 1956 . He made 212 appearances for Schalke.

In 1958 Schalke 04 was again champions of the Oberliga West and won the final of the German soccer championship against Hamburger SV 3-0. Matzkowski, however, had practically ended his career as a football player and only helped out at a few games. Matzkowski played once in the B national team , on April 14, 1951 against Switzerland . Although he was also appointed to the squad of the senior national team, but not used.

After his active time as a football player, Matzkowski worked as a coach . He led the Schalke 04 amateur team in the highest amateur class and later coached the teams of Sportfreunde Gelsenkirchen 07/12, SV Zweckel , SV Friedrichsfeld and TuS Jahn Werdohl .
