career

Around 1950/51, the trained baker came from Tura Elsen (City of Paderborn) to Borussia Dortmund's Borsigplatz. He was a fast winger with finishing qualities, but very prone to injury. Already on the starting day, August 27, 1950, in a 2-1 home win against SpVgg Erkenschwick, coach Hans-Josef Kretschmann made his debut in the major league. Together with Werner Erdmann , Edmond Kasperski , Josef Linneweber and Erich Schanko, he formed the attack of the black and yellow. On the second day of the round, he contributed two goals to the 5-0 away win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the course of the round he made 22 league appearances with four goals and Dortmund took third place.

For the 1951/52 round, Hans Schmidt, a new coach came to the team from the Rote Erde stadium and Alfred Niepieklo, a dangerous attacker. Flügel, the fast-paced wing sprinter, scored 14 goals in 25 league games and BVB took fourth place. From the 17th to 19th matchday, January 6th to January 20th, 1952, Dortmund's left winger scored two goals each in the three rounds against 1. FC Köln, Rheydter SV and Schalke 04. When Dortmund scored two big wins against Spfr. Katernberg with 9: 1 and Hamborn 07 with 7: 0 goals, he entered the list of goalscorers with one goal each. In 1952/53, BVB won the title in front of 1. FC Köln and Rot-Weiss Essen in the second year of coaching ex-Nürnberger “Bumbes” Schmidt. Alfred Preißler had returned from Münster and Heinrich Kwiatkowski was guarding the gate. Hans wing had his share of the championship with 23 league appearances and nine goals. His qualities as a winger brought him to the B national team on November 9, 1952 at the international match in Basel against Switzerland. Together with right winger Felix Gerritzen, he formed the German wing tongs in the 2-0 win and center forward Willi Schröder distinguished himself as a two-time goal scorer. His appearance on February 1, 1953 in Düsseldorf in the representative game between West Germany and the Southwest team was confirmation of his impressive performance in the BVB jersey. In the final round of the German championship in 1953 he was on the ball in all six games against VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV and Union 06 Berlin. Dortmund opened the final on May 3 with a 2-1 home win. In the 75th minute, wing scored the 2-1 winning goal. In a 4-1 home win against Hamburger SV on May 24, he scored two goals against his opponent Walter Schemel (right defender). Due to the 1: 2 defeat on the last day of the final round, June 7th, at VfB Stuttgart, Dortmund lost their participation in the final with the same number of points. Wing had scored five goals in six games. The main formation in the BVB attack mostly consisted of Herbert Sandmann , Alfred Preissler, Edmund Kasperski, Alfred Niepieklo and Hans Flügel.

In Schmidt's third year as coach, 1953/54, Flügel scored three goals in an 8-0 away win in Mönchengladbach. He had a great day with the 3-0 away win at Schalke 04 on November 29, 1953, he contributed two goals. He impressively confirmed his appointment to the West German selection in the comparison against North Germany on October 10, 1953 in Dortmund. He made 27 league games in the season and scored 13 goals. In the 1954/55 series, Alfred Kelbassa and Wolfgang Peters added two more reinforcements for the offensive and the young talent Helmut Kapitulski already showed his qualities in his 13 missions with three hits, but BVB did not get beyond fourth place. In the last year of coaching "Bumbes" Schmidt, Flügel had completed 21 appearances with four goals and was also part of the BVB team, which on January 30, 1955 on the Bökelberg against Mönchengladbach brought about a memorable 6: 6 draw - two goals from Flügel .

Under the new coach Helmut Schneider, injuries prevented the left winger from playing in the entire preliminary round in 1955/56. After two attempts at the beginning of the second half of the season, the season was over for him. Kapitulski became his successor and a regular on the left wing. In the first two rounds of the series 1956/57 - on August 18 and 25, 1956 - against SV Sodingen and FC Schalke 04, Hans wing played his last two league games for Borussia Dortmund. Due to injury, he ended his career after 122 league appearances with 44 goals in the summer of 1957.
