career

For the 1950/51 season, the 26-year-old amateur player Josef Linneweber moved from VfL Geseke to Borussia Dortmund in the Oberliga West. The Dortmund team had won the championship in the west in the 1949/50 season and, with Alfred Preissler , who had scored 24 goals, also set the top scorer in the league. Since Alfred Preißler and Rudolf Schulz moved to Preußen Münster in the summer of 1950 - the "Hundred Thousand Mark Storm" was born in Münster - Linneweber made his debut immediately on the first match day, August 27, 1950, in a 2-1 home win against SpVgg Erkenschwick as a center forward for Borussia Dortmund in the Oberliga West. The newcomer scored both Dortmund goals. Borussia did not manage to defend their title, just behind champions FC Schalke 04 (42:18 points) and Preußen Münster (41:19 points), Dortmund ended up in third place, two and one point behind. The newcomer had played 29 games and scored an impressive 18 goals. In the top scorers list of the western league, he landed in third place behind Hans Kleina (23 goals; FC Schalke 04) and Hans Müller (20 goals; Fortuna Düsseldorf). The Dortmund storm formation in the 1950/51 season was usually: Werner Erdmann , Edmond Kasperski , Linneweber, Kurt Sahm and Hans Flügel .

With the newcomers Alfred Niepieklo and Elwin Schlebrowski in the 1951/52 round, Josef Linneweber's stakes fell significantly, he only made six league games with one goal in his second season at Borussia Dortmund. At the end of the season he was tested by national coach Sepp Herberger in the third international match of the new amateur national team on June 8, 1952 with a view to the football tournament of the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. The DFB team won the last international match before Helsinki in Munich with 2-0 goals. The attack was manned by Matthias Mauritz , Ludwig Hinterstocker , Hans Zeitler , Georg Stollenwerk and Josef Linneweber. Linneweber then did not belong to the final Olympic squad.

When Borussia Dortmund 1952/53 - Alfred Preißler had returned from Münster - succeeded in winning the championship again in the Oberliga West, the man from Geseke only made two appearances and one goal in the association round. He played the first two championship games on August 24 and 31, 1952 against Alemannia Aachen and Preußen Dellbrück - against Dellbrück he formed the inner storm together with Schlebrowski and Niepieklo - and otherwise had to be content with the role of a spectator. In the summer of 1953, Josef Linneweber's career in the Oberliga West was over.
