career

Eintracht Braunschweig, 1942 to 1946; 1947 to 1950

The stool, which originally came from Muggensturm in Baden in the Rastatt district, is said to have played with the blue-yellow club of Eintracht Braunschweig in what was then the Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig from 1942 onwards, according to the player lexicon on the TSV Eller 04 station. Under coach Georg Knöpfle , Braunschweig succeeded in 1942/43 with 146:20 goals and 35: 1 points to win the championship in the relay and thus to reach the final round of the German championship in 1943. In the first game, center forward Schemel and his teammates at Eintracht met on 2 May on Victoria Hamburg. The 19-year-old attacker contributed three goals to the 5: 1 success, although ex-national player Hans Schwartz was on the field as the middle runner for "Vicky" . In the second round, however, the hurdle Dresdner SC was too high. In front of 30,000 spectators in the Ostragehege, Braunschweig had no chance against Willibald Kreß , Walter Dzur and the dangerous inner storm of the Saxons with Heinrich Schaffer , Helmut Schön and Richard Hofmann in the 4-0 defeat on May 16.

In the 1946/47 season, the agile and two-footed attacker stormed at Westfalia Herne in the Landesliga Westfalen. Together with his teammates Günter Grandt , Paul Matzkowski and Ehrenfried Wydra , Schemel and the team from the Stadion am Schloss Strünkede only took fourth place and that was not enough for inclusion in the central league top of the Oberliga West, which was newly introduced from 1947/48.

Therefore, from the 1947/48 season onwards, the attacker tied his kick boots for Eintracht again. By winning the championship in 1946/47 in the Lower Saxony-South Oberliga, it was approved for the newly installed Oberliga Nord for the 1947/48 round. In the first three rounds in the Oberliga Nord, 1947/48 to 1949/50, the dangerous striker scored 44 goals in 72 league games for the "Lions". After his 17 hits in the 1949/50 round, he had several offers. He signed two contracts: with VfB Mühlburg and with Hamburger SV. Schemel was therefore banned by the DFB for one year. He then decided for HSV and was eligible to play for the Rothenbaum team from August 1, 1951.

Hamburger SV, 1950 to 1958

In Hamburg, the striker had to deal with coach Georg Knöpfle again. He made his debut on August 29, 1951 in a 5-3 home win against Concordia Hamburg with a goal in the HSV-Elf. Schemel came to 20 league games with six goals and celebrated the championship win in 1951/52 before VfL Osnabrück. In the finals against 1. FC Saarbrücken, 1. FC Nürnberg and FC Schalke 04 there were four more games with one goal, but it was only enough for third place. In his second round with the Rothosen, 1952/53, he came in the renewed championship success of HSV, now before Holstein Kiel, Werder Bremen and VfL Osnabrück, on 26 league appearances, scoring 14 goals. In the final round in 1953 things did not go well for HSV, VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund were significantly better. Schemel played all six group games, but the last four as a right defender at Fritz Laband's side in the World Cup system that was used at the time . In the first league round of the two great talents Uwe Seeler and Klaus Stürmer , 1954/55 , the former Braunschweig player under coach Martin Wilke completed all 30 league games and scored twelve goals in the renewed Northern Championship with a goal difference of 108:41. The outstanding attack in the Northern League was achieved by Walter Schemel (30-12), striker (23-18), Seeler (26-28), Günter Schlegel (29-29) and Herbert Wojtkowiak (30-4) to win the title alone 91 of the 108 goals. In the final round , Schemel and colleagues failed to make it into the final , one point behind 1. FC Kaiserslautern. In all six group games he had attacked the right winger. When he was able to celebrate the fourth championship with the diamond carriers in 1955/56, he had moved from attack to defense and completed his 26 league games in the position of right-back. Another six games were added in the final round. HSV had to be content with second place in the group, level on points with the eventual German champions Borussia Dortmund. Schemel won the North German Cup on January 1, 1956 at Rothenbaum with a 3-1 win against Holstein Kiel. In the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, he and his teammates prevailed on May 5, 1956 against Fortuna Düsseldorf with 2-1 goals. Against the defending champion Karlsruher SC, however, there was a 1: 3 final defeat in the Wildpark Stadium on August 5, 1956 . Schemel played right defender and KSC left winger Bernhard Termath scored two goals to win his team.

For the fifth championship in the northern league, 1956/57, Schemel contributed two goals in 19 league games, he was mostly used as a defender. In the final round, however, he acted again in all four matches as a striker. HSV prevailed against Duisburg SpV , 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Saarbrücken and stood on June 23, 1957 in Hanover against defending champion Borussia Dortmund in the final of the German championship. Together with Uwe Reuter , Uwe Seeler, Gerhard Krug and Franz Klepacz he formed the HSV attack. With two goals each from Alfred Kelbassa and Alfred Niepieklo , the Westphalia defended the championship title.

In his sixth championship win with Hamburger SV, in the 1957/58 season, he was used again in five league games and scored one goal. His last game in the Oberliga Nord played Schemel on February 23, 1958 in a 3-2 home win against Altona 93. Overall, Schemel is led with 214 league games with 82 goals.

He ended his career in the summer of 1958 together with Posipal, Börner and Liese. For the selection of Northern Germany, he had played two games against West Germany and the German B national team in October and November 1953. After his playing career, he was still active as an amateur coach at TSV Uetersen and Holstein Quickborn.
