The publishing house Die Werkstatt is a German book publisher whose program focuses on publications on the topic of football .

history

The publishing house Die Werkstatt was founded in 1981 in Göttingen . Initially, the focus was on non-fiction and educational literature on environmental and peace topics. It came to cooperation with organizations such as B. Greenpeace .

The first football books were published in 1992 and since then have been the focus of the publishing program alongside other sports. In doing so, the workshop managed to find a gap in the market, since in addition to classic football topics such as player biographies or club chronicles, critical aspects such as B. racist fan groups or homosexuality in football were picked up. By concentrating on the core business of sports and soccer publications, the workshop was able to develop into a leading provider in these areas in Germany. Every year since 2006, one of the publisher's titles has been nominated for the Football Book of the Year award from the German Academy for Football Culture, and one author has won the award three times.

In May 2012, a collaboration with the news agency dapd was agreed. The first joint project was a book for the European Football Championship in 2012 and later in the year for the 2012 Summer Olympics, as well as a sports book of the year. The long-term cooperation planned by both sides ended a year later after the news agency finally ceased its service in April 2013 after a second filing for bankruptcy .

Publishing program

The complete directory currently comprises around 500 books (as of September 2013). Sports books form the main focus of the publishing program at 80%, with the proportion of football publications within the sports block being 90%. Books on culinary topics, which the publisher has published since 1998, as well as non-fiction books on other topics complete the offer. In addition to printed books, the publisher also sells e-books and, to a small extent, magazines. It is mainly sold through stationary bookshops. In addition, the Internet , which accounts for 25%, and fan shops are also used as additional sales channels.

Others

Three of the four founders are still active in the management today. Editing and production are located at the headquarters in Göttingen, sales and delivery were relocated to Rastede in 1990 .

The publisher is also regularly represented with its own stands at book fairs, including the two largest German trade fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig .
