Erich Schanko (born October 4, 1919 in Dortmund , † November 14, 2005 in Kamen ) was a German football player .

Career

Erich Schanko moved from TuS Bövinghausen to Borussia Dortmund in 1947 . Here he was able to prevail quickly and stood with the black and yellow in 1949 in the final of the German championship . Schanko and his Dortmunders lost this game, which went down in football history as the “sun battle”, after extra time with VfR Mannheim 2: 3. In addition, Schanko lost several teeth in this game. Despite his advanced age, Schanko was appointed to the senior national team 14 times (in 16 consecutive games) between 1951 and 1954 . His last job was in the qualifying game for the 1954 World Cup in Saarland . In the end, however , Sepp Herberger appointed Karl Mai to the squad for the World Cup . Even in the club, Schanko was never very successful. Due to injuries, he lost his regular place in Dortmund's first German championship in 1956. He came to his last two missions in the 1956/57 season.

In the mid-1960s he coached RSV Meinerzhagen in the Westphalia Association .

Schanko remained connected to Borussia. Well beyond the age of 60, he regularly laced up his football boots to play with the traditional team. He was also a member of the BVB's council of elders.

In 2012, the Erich-Schanko-Strasse named after him was inaugurated in Dortmund-Brackel, near the BVB training center.
