Salif Sané (born August 25, 1990 in Lormont , France ) is a Senegalese football player . He grew up in France and played for Girondins Bordeaux and Hannover 96 , among others . He has been with FC Schalke 04 since 2018 and is a member of the Senegalese national team .

Club career

Sané started playing soccer in his birthplace near Bordeaux at the US Lormont and moved to Girondins Bordeaux in 2009 . There he made his debut in the first team in December 2010. In the 2011/12 season he was loaned to AS Nancy . AS Nancy took a purchase option for Sané for the 2012/13 season.

For the 2013/14 season , Sané moved to the German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . During the season, Sané was noticed by misconduct; so he was deleted from the squad before the game against Eintracht Frankfurt because he had not appeared on time to leave for Frankfurt. He also went on summer vacation without the approval of his association and had to pay a fine of 10,000 euros. Because of his behavior, Sané was deleted from the Bundesliga squad at the beginning of the 2014/15 season and transferred to the second team . Despite the demotion and a loan offer from the French first division club Stade Reims , he stayed with Hannover 96. On December 13, 2014, he returned to the first team in a 3-3 game against Werder Bremen .

After five seasons, Sané made use of a contract release clause and switched to FC Schalke 04 for a transfer fee of around seven million euros during the 2018 summer break . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2022. In the 3-1 away win against VfB Stuttgart on December 22, 2018 (17th matchday), he scored his first competitive goal for Schalke.

National team

As a citizen of both countries, Salif Sané was eligible to play for both France and Senegal. Just like his brother Lamine , he decided to play for Senegal. He made his debut on June 7, 2013 in the World Cup qualifier against Angola (1-1). He was nominated for the African Cup of Nations 2015 , but was not used in the tournament. He was then no longer considered for the national team for over two years before he celebrated his comeback against Nigeria on March 23, 2017 .

At the 2018 World Cup , Sané was part of the Senegalese squad . With his teammate Kalidou Koulibaly he formed the central defense during the tournament and was on the pitch for over 90 minutes in all three group matches. Senegal was eliminated from the tournament with four points due to the poorer fair play rating against Japan .
