Ralf Fährmann (born September 27, 1988 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He is under contract with FC Schalke 04 .

Club career

Youth in Chemnitz

Ralf Fährmann began his career in 1995 as a goalkeeper in the youth department of VfB Chemnitz , for whom he played for three years. In 1998 he joined the youth team of Chemnitzer FC , five years later he moved to FC Schalke 04 .

Youth at Schalke

In the youth of Schalke, Fährmann became a regular player, as he did in Chemnitz. On November 19, 2005, Ralf Rangnick appointed him to the Bundesliga team at the age of 17, but remained without a commitment. In the U19 he was represented by Mohamed Amsif . As a first of the season West is ferryman qualified his team for the championship finals and went after Hertha BSC had struck, the final one. There they defeated the A-youth of FC Bayern Munich 2-1 and won the German A-junior championship in 2006. For the 2006/07 season, Fährmann remained the regular keeper of the A-juniors, but was appointed to the professional team during the winter break. Amsif acted as a regular goalkeeper in the U19.

Professional at Schalke 04

After Frank Rost moved to Hamburger SV in January 2007, Fährmann signed a professional contract that ran until June 30, 2009. However, he was denied a professional appearance in the 2006/07 season . From the 2007/08 season he rose to number 3 behind goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and substitute Mathias Schober . However, Fährmann initially only played in the Oberliga Westfalen for the club's second team. At the end of the season, the team rose to the Regionalliga West . Fährmann made his first Bundesliga appearance in the 2008/09 season in the Revierderby at Borussia Dortmund on September 13, 2008 (final score: 3: 3) after both Neuer and Schober were injured. In total, he made three Bundesliga appearances as well as one appearance in the DFB Cup and one in the UEFA Cup .

Eintracht Frankfurt

Fährmann did not renew his contract with FC Schalke 04, which expired in the summer of 2009, and signed a contract with Eintracht Frankfurt until June 30, 2012 for the 2009/10 season . However, a serious injury slowed him down again - Fährmann had already suffered his first cruciate ligament tear in his youth - so that Eintracht coach Michael Skibbe continued to rely on Oka Nikolov as the goalkeeper. Fährmann first came on the 12th matchday in the away game in Leverkusen and conceded four goals. In the following season , the new coach Christoph Daum relied on Fährmann as number 1 in goal from March 2011 for the rest of the season. At the end of the season, Eintracht was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .

Return to FC Schalke 04

During the summer break of 2011, FC Schalke 04 signed Fährmann again, this time as the successor to the national goalkeeper Neuer who had migrated to Bayern Munich . He signed a four-year contract and moved free of charge, as his contract did not apply to the second division with the relegated Frankfurters. He made his competitive comeback with the cup winners in the DFL Supercup against Borussia Dortmund . On penalties, he saved the shots of Kevin Großkreutz and Ivan Perišić ; Schalke 04 won the Supercup.

On the 9th day of the season , Fährmann suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in the game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and had to take a break for several months. The substitutes Lars Unnerstall and the later committed Timo Hildebrand and Mathias Schober were preferred to him after his recovery.

In the 2012/13 season , Fährmann was only used in the second team of FC Schalke. During and after Unnerstall's long injury break, Fährmann rose to become the second goalkeeper behind the now established Hildebrand.

After almost two years without a professional appearance, he was supposed to play in the DFB Cup game against SV Darmstadt 98 at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , but had to cancel due to an injury. He made his professional comeback on the 9th match day of the season in a 3-2 away win against Eintracht Braunschweig , as Hildebrand was out of action due to a lumbago . As a result of another injury to Hildebrand, he played his first UEFA Champions League game on November 26, 2013 in a 0-0 draw against Steaua Bucharest . Ferryman Hildebrand, who u. a. had shown weaknesses in the Champions League game against Chelsea , out of the gate and completed the remaining games of the first half of the season. Six years after his debut in 2008, Fährmann was the first long-term goalkeeper at Schalke.

With Fährmann as number 1 in goal, Schalke 04 started the second half of the season with four wins from four games. His achievements were named as one of the reasons for Schalke's good performance. Finally, by the end of the season, it was the most successful second half of the Schalke club's history.

In the summer of 2014 he was named Schalke Player of the 2013/14 season in an election organized by the Schalke Fan Club Association. In the election for district footballer of the year 2014 , Fährmann landed in third place behind the world champions Benedikt Höwedes (1st place, FC Schalke 04 ) and Mats Hummels (2nd place, Borussia Dortmund ).

Ferryman started the 2014/15 season as number 1 . However, after the departure of Unnerstall and Hildebrand with Fabian Giefer from Fortuna Düsseldorf, a new equal goalkeeper was committed. In addition, there was the experienced Christian Wetklo , who was primarily part of the second team, but acted as his deputy at the beginning of the season on behalf of Giefer. After Fährmann had played all the competitive games in the first half of the season over the full distance, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the training camp in Qatar and then missed the start of the second half of the season. He was briefly represented by Giefer and, after his injury, by Timon Wellenreuther . From the 27th match day until the end of the season Fährmann guarded the goal. In an insecure team, Fährmann was considered one of the best players; the team qualified for the UEFA Europa League . On October 16, 2015, Fährmann extended his contract term until 2020.

Fährmann was also a regular goalkeeper under coach André Breitenreiter and only missed a minute of the 2015/16 Bundesliga season when he was replaced by Alexander Nübel in the 90th minute on the last match day. He also played every group game in the Europa League for the entire season. He only missed the second main round game of the DFB Cup due to gastrointestinal flu.

For the 2017/18 season he was appointed team captain by coach Domenico Tedesco and was in goal in all of the team's 39 games of the season. In the following season Fährmann lost his regular place to U21 national goalkeeper Alexander Nübel after only 3 games to zero and was only used in the Champions League .

Two loans and return to Schalke

For the 2019/20 season, Fährmann extended his contract with FC Schalke 04 for a further year until 2023, at the same time that he was on loan to the Premier League for newly promoted Norwich City . With Norwich, where he met seven compatriots and the German head coach Daniel Farke , he started the season as a replacement for Tim Krul and played one game each in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup . At the beginning of March 2020, Fährmann was loaned to the Norwegian first division club Brann Bergen until June 30, 2020 , for whom the 2020 season would have started at the beginning of April. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , almost all leagues were suspended in March. From mid-April, Fährmann trained again with FC Schalke 04 with the approval of Brann Bergen under David Wagner , who took over the team at the beginning of the season. When the Norwegian league was resumed in mid-June, Fährmann did not return to Bergen. The loan formally ended on June 30th.

In the 2020/21 season , the goalkeeper is back in the FC Schalke 04 squad. His contract there runs until June 30, 2023.

National team

From 2003 to 2004 Fährmann played five games for the U16 national team . After that he guarded the goal of the German U17s for one year from 2004 . In total, he played 13 games for this junior selection. From the end of 2005 to 2006 he was allowed to guard the gate of the U18 . Fährmann played a total of four games for the U19 national team and took part in the U19 European Championship in 2007 . He also played five games for the U20 national team and one game for the U21 team on November 18, 2008 in a 1-0 win over Italy .

Private

Fährmann's older brother Falk is also a goalkeeper and plays for the Chemnitz regional league club FSV 08 Grüna-Mittelbach. From 2006 to 2014 Fährmann was in a relationship with a German model. In 2016 he married his then girlfriend Nadine Lukas.

Others

During the Bundesliga match between FC Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt on March 12, 2011, Fährmann made a strange mistake as the Frankfurt goalkeeper when he failed to notice Raúl lurking behind him while attempting a kick . His attempt at clarification ended with a penalty for Schalke 04, which José Manuel Jurado converted to 1-0. In the end, Schalke 04 won 2-1.

On August 30, 2014, Fährmann suffered hearing damage in a game against FC Bayern Munich after Robert Lewandowski shot his right ear .
