Domenico Tedesco (born September 12, 1985 in Rossano , Italy ) is a German-Italian football coach . From 2017 to March 2019 he was the head coach of the German first division club FC Schalke 04 , with whom he once became German runner-up. Since October 2019 he has been the head coach of the Russian record champions Spartak Moscow .

Youth and education

When Tedesco was two years old, his family emigrated from the Italian province of Cosenza to Germany and settled in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg . As a student, Tedesco did an internship in the sports department of the Eßlinger Zeitung , where his father worked as a printer .

After Tedesco a vocational training to merchant in wholesale and foreign trade had been completed, he completed a Bachelor -Studies of industrial engineering and a master -Studies in innovation management . He finished the course of the German Football Association for football teachers at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy as the best in his year with an overall grade of 1.0. As a football player, Tedesco was active for ASV Aichwald in the district league A.

Career

Beginnings in the junior sector

Tedesco initially trained the second F-youth of ASV Aichwald.

On July 1, 2008, Tedesco began to work alongside his studies in the youth department of VfB Stuttgart as an assistant coach under Thomas Schneider . From 2013 he was initially in charge of the B youth team (U17) as an assistant coach , and was appointed head coach during the season. At the end of the 2014/15 season he left VfB Stuttgart and became the youth coach of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . Before the 2016/17 season he was promoted to coach of the A-youth (U19).

Erzgebirge Aue

On March 8, 2017, the bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga , FC Erzgebirge Aue , signed Tedesco as head coach. He received a contract for the 2nd and 3rd leagues that ran until mid-2018 . Under his leadership, the club got 13 points in the first five games and was no longer on a relegation zone. Despite a 0: 1 defeat on matchday 34 at Fortuna Düsseldorf , the 3-point lead he had worked out with his team was enough for him to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga.

FC Schalke 04

For the 2017/18 season , Tedesco took over the Bundesliga team of FC Schalke 04 from Markus Weinzierl, who was on leave . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. After he was runner-up in his first season with Schalke and had reached the semi-finals in the DFB Cup , he extended his contract with Schalke prematurely until summer 2022 in August 2018. In mid-March 2019, the club released Tedesco after the team had scored 0 : 7 was eliminated from the Champions League at Manchester City and was in 14th place in the Bundesliga. He was followed by the Schalke “ coach of the century” and Schalke supervisory board member Huub Stevens and Mike Büskens as his assistant coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Spartak Moscow

On October 14, 2019, Tedesco took over the coaching position of the Russian first division club and record champions Spartak Moscow as the successor to Oleg Kononov, who was on leave . At the time, the club was in ninth place with 14 points after twelve match days. By signing the contract with Spartak Moscow, Tedesco's last club, Schalke 04, was able to save five million euros, as his contract would have been valid until June 2022. He received a contract valid until June 30, 2022. Tedesco is the first German coach at Spartak Moscow.

Domenico Tedesco is married and has one daughter.
