history

On April 25, 1868, the first edition of the Esslinger Zeitung appeared first as a trial edition, then officially three times a week from May 1, 1868, and on working days from July 1, 1868. On October 1, 1869, the Eßlinger Zeitung was taken over by the book printer owners Otto Bechtle and Matthias Linsenmann from the JF Schreiber publishing house. From September 1, 1872, Otto Bechtle became the sole owner of the newspaper and the M. Linsenmann'schen Buchdruckerei publishing house, in which the Esslinger Zeitung was published, and shortly thereafter renamed the Otto Bechtle printing company. In 1886 the newspaper moved to the Esslingen market square; at the same time a high-speed press with a gas engine was introduced. Further renewals of the printing machines followed in 1890 and 1900. This year, 12,000 newspapers could be printed per hour. Further modernizations of the facility from 1900 followed in 1906 and 1907.

In 1912, Bechtle took over the Plochinger Zeitung and the Neckar and Filder Zeitung, which appeared in Köngen. In 1926 the newspapers were converted to the Berlin format . Otto Bechtle died on September 3, 1926, his son Richard Bechtle took over the business, but in 1933 he had to surrender the majority of his shares in the publishing house and thus also in the Eßlinger Zeitung to the Nazi press. At the same time he was banned from practicing his profession and banned from managing the publishing house and the entire editorial team. The Eßlinger Zeitung could not appear again until February 1, 1949, but initially under the title Neckarpost, licensed by the US occupation forces; from July 1949 then again under the old name Eßlinger Zeitung. This time Otto Wolfgang Bechtle took over the management, as Richard Bechtle died on October 2nd, 1944.

In May 1951 a new rotary machine was introduced. Since the Rotenberg Verlag was acquired in 1960, the Cannstatter and Untertürkheimer newspapers have also been owned by Bechtle Verlag. In 1963 the company moved to its current publishing location on Zeppelinstrasse in Esslingen am Neckar. The offset process has been used since 1979 and the newspaper has been published in the Rheinische format since 1983 .

In 1995 the majority of the company was taken over by Otto Wolfgang Bechtle's family, further shares were held by the Stuttgarter Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft Eberle GmbH & Co., based in Stuttgart, as well as A. Gottliebs and F. Osswalds Buchdruckereien GmbH & Co. KG (today GO Druck Media Verlag GmbH & Co. KG) based in Kirchheim unter Teck. In January 2005, the printing division was spun off into the independent subsidiary Bechtle Druck & Service.

In October 2016, the Stuttgarter Zeitung , with a 24% minority shareholder until then, took over a further 63% of the Bechtle publishing house from the previous majority shareholder Christine Bechtle-Kobarg. After almost 150 years, the founding Bechtle family's commitment to the Eßlinger Zeitung ended. The remaining 13% are still owned by GO Verlag, which publishes the Kirchheim daily newspaper Der Teckbote .

Www.esslinger-zeitung.de was revised again in 2016 and a digital subscription was introduced, which includes an e-paper for stationary computers and notebooks, the e-paper app for tablet PCs and access to all articles from esslinger-zeitung.de includes. In addition, a “news desk” was introduced in the editorial office.

Since 2017, the Bechtle publishing house has been part of the newspaper group of the Südwestdeutsche Medienholding (SWMH) , whose best-known titles include the Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as the Stuttgarter Nachrichten and Stuttgarter Zeitung .

New look for the 150th anniversary in 2018: Relaunch of the Eßlinger Zeitung and introduction of a new editorial system. E-paper subscribers receive the Eßlinger Zeitung as early as 7 p.m.
