Hamza Mendyl ( Arabic حمزة منديل, DMG Ḥamza Mindīl ; * October 21, 1997 in Casablanca , Morocco ) is a Moroccan football player of Ivorian descent . He is under contract with the German Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 .
Career
Mendyl made his professional debut in a 1-0 win for Lille OSC against SM Caen on February 16, 2017. On August 17, 2018, he moved to FC Schalke 04 . There he signed a five-year contract. In April 2019, Mendyl was transferred to the Schalke U23 until further notice by head coach Huub Stevens , who had succeeded the released Domenico Tedesco, due to disciplinary measures . His loan to FCO Dijon was announced on August 21, 2019 .
National team career
Mendyl was born in Casablanca. His father is from Ivory Coast and his mother is Moroccan. He had played through some of the Moroccan Football Association youth teams before making his senior debut. On his debut, Morocco won the qualifier for the Africa Cup 2017 against São Tomé and Príncipe 2-0.
Mendyl was appointed by the Moroccan national coach Hervé Renard for the final squad of the Moroccan national soccer team for the soccer world cup 2018 in Russia. However, he was not used; Morocco was the last in Group B to be eliminated from the tournament.
