Wydad AthleticClub , often known by the abbreviation WAC ( Arabic نادي الوداد الرياضي, DMG Nādī l-Widād ar-riyāḍī ), is a Moroccan sports club in Casablanca , best known for its soccer team, which plays in GNF 1 .
history
The club was founded on May 8, 1937 as a swimming club. A year later the offer was expanded to include tennis, and in 1939 the football department was created.
There are several versions of the name Wydad . The most common version is based on the meaning of the word in Arabic: There Wydad means 'love'. An anecdote is told in a chronicle about the association: At one of the meetings of the founding committee, one of the members appeared too late because he had previously seen a film by the Egyptian singer and actress Umm Kulthum entitled Wydad in the cinema . This is said to have given the founders the idea of naming.
