Badou Zaki ( Arabic بادو الزاكي, DMG Bādū az-Zākī ; * April 2, 1959 in Sidi Kacem ) is a Moroccan football coach and former player. In the vote for Africa's Goalkeeper of the Century, he was voted fourth behind Joseph-Antoine Bell , Thomas N'Kono and Sadok Sassi .

Player career

Zaki played for AS Salé at the beginning of his career before moving to the newly crowned champions Wydad Casablanca in 1978 . But for the next championship it lasted until 1986, when the goalkeeper was already playing his eighth season for the club and has already won the national cup twice. In his last and most successful season, he was also voted Africa's Footballer of the Year by France Football . Then he moved to the Spanish first division promoted RCD Mallorca . After completing the championship group last played in Spain, he reached an excellent 6th place in the table with his new club in the first season. In the following season 1987/88, however, the good result could not be confirmed and Mallorca had to start third from last in the second division. There the Moroccan reached fourth place in the table with his team. In the subsequent promotion playoff, the club prevailed against Espanyol Barcelona 2-1 after 2 games and, in addition to their relegation, sealed their own immediate promotion . In the following two years Badou Zaki stayed with his team always in the middle of the table. It was not until the 1991/92 season that Mallorca's performance stagnated again. With only 30 goals scored in 38 league games, the goalkeeper's team was bottom of the table and relegated again. Zaki was no longer number 1 in goal and left the club during that season. At FUS de Rabat , he let his career end in his home country from 1992 to 1993.

National team

For the Moroccan national soccer team , Zaki played, among other things, at the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 . There he and his team lost to the Germans in the round of 16, who won 1-0 with a goal from Lothar Matthäus .

Coaching career

Zaki's first coaching station was FUS de Rabat , where he was last active as a player. Until 1996 he coached two of his former clubs with Wydad Casablanca and AS Salé . The former goalkeeper was with league rivals Chabab Mohammédia from 1996 to 1998 before returning to Casablanca. After further positions at Kawkab Marrakech and Maghreb Fez , he took over the post of national coach for Morocco in 2002 . After he and his team failed in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , he resigned from this position. In the 2006/07 season, Zaki worked again for Marrakech, before he took over the coaching position of Wydad Casablanca for the third time in 2008. On May 2, 2014 , he took over the post of Moroccan national coach again. He was assigned Mustapha Hadji and Saïd Chiba (both played at the 1998 World Cup) as assistants and Khalid Fouhami (goalkeeper at CAN 2004) as goalkeeping coach.
