Joseph-Antoine Bell (born October 8, 1954 in Mouandé , Cameroon) is a former Cameroonian football goalkeeper . He was considered one of Africa's best goalkeepers throughout his career and was voted Africa's Goalkeeper of the Century in 1998 .

Club career

Bell began his career in 1975 at Union Douala , with which he became Cameroonian champion in 1976 and 1978. In 1979 he won the CAF Champions League with this club . From 1981 to 1983, Bell went to Africa Sports National . Then he moved to Egypt to Arab Contractors .

In 1985 he was signed by the top French club Olympique Marseille . In the 1988/89 season he was at Sporting Toulon in goal and in 1989 went to Girondins Bordeaux . AS Saint-Étienne was the last club he played for and joined in 1991. Here he ended his career in 1994. In France's top division , he made a total of 314 appearances in these nine years. He could not win a national title; but he was twice runner-up (1987 with Marseille and 1990 with Bordeaux) and was also in two cup finals (1986 and 1987), but he lost both with Marseille - and each against Bordeaux.

National team

For the Cameroonian national team he was in goal 52 times and took part in a soccer world championship three times ( 1982 , 1990 , 1994 ) . In 1984 and 1988 he was African champion with Cameroon , in 1992 he was in the semifinals of this competition, in which he could only be defeated on penalties against Ivory Coast.
