Adriaan van der Stel

Adriaan van der Stel , also Adriaen or Ariën (* January 1605 in Dordrecht , † around 1646 in the Dutch East Indies ) was governor of Mauritius from 1640 to 1645 and in this capacity the successor to Cornelius Gooyer . After he was transferred to Ceylon in 1645 , he was replaced by Jacob van der Meersh .

He was in the service of the VOC and in 1623 he finished his service on the ship De Star and became "assistant assistant" in India. After the termination of his contract, he settled in Batavia as a free citizen and private merchant .

On May 19, 1645 in the war against Raja Senga, he fell into the hands of Sinhalese warriors, who later beheaded him. The victors carried his head around on a stake and finally sent it to the governor of Ceylon.

family

His parents were Simon van der Stelle, a member of the Dordrecht magistrate, and Mariken Adriaens. He was their youngest son. The eldest son of Adriaan van der Stel and Maria Lievens was Simon van der Stel , a former governor of the Cape Colony .
