Frédéric Oumar Kanouté (born September 2, 1977 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon , near Lyon ) is a former French - Malian football player . He was mostly used as a center forward in attack and, after five years in the Premier League, spent most of his career at Sevilla FC , with whom he won two Spanish Cups and twice in a row the UEFA Cup .

Career

societies

At the age of five Kanouté joined his first club, Charcot was a small club from his hometown. In 1988 he was discovered at a tournament by Olympique Lyon , who accepted Kanouté first in their youth department and at the age of 15 in the youth academy. 1997 Kanouté moved up to the first team. With the departure of strikers Florian Maurice and Franck Gava , Kanouté became a regular at OL right from the start. Due to an injury in the 1998/1999 season Kanouté came to significantly fewer inserts and with the commitment of the two strikers Sonny Anderson and Tony Vairelles in the following season Kanouté lost his regular place in the team.

In March 2000, Kanouté was therefore initially awarded for three months to West Ham United , who exercised a purchase option after this time and committed him for 5,625,000 euros. Until 2003 he stayed with the club from east London and played 84 times in the league (29 goals) before moving to rival Tottenham Hotspur from north London in exchange for Matthew Etherington and for an additional £ 3,500,000 . In total, he played 60 league games for the club from White Hart Lane and scored 14 goals.

He moved to Sevilla FC for the 2005/2006 season for 6,500,000 euros . There he came in his first season to 30 league appearances and scored six goals. In the 2005/06 UEFA Cup , which he won with the club, he scored the same number of goals in eleven games. As a substitute in the final, he made it 4-0 in the 89th minute. On May 16, 2007 he was again in the UEFA Cup final with Sevilla FC. He scored the 2-1 for Sevilla in the 105th minute, which was very important in the end, as Jonatas scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 115th minute and there was a penalty shoot-out. Kanoute scored the first penalty for Sevilla and converted. The penalty shoot-out ended with a 3-1 for Sevilla. With this, Kanoute defended the UEFA Cup (then Real Madrid) for the first time in 21 years with Sevilla FC and made a name for himself in the history books. He scored four goals in ten games in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup season. In the league, he scored 21 times in the same season. He was named Africa's Footballer of the Year 2007 by the African Football Association .

For the 2012/13 season, the now 34-year-old Kanouté moved to Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League for a year and a half . Then he ended his football career.

National team

Kanouté, who has both French and Malian citizenship, decided to join the Malian national team in early 2004 . At the 2004 African Cup of Nations he reached fourth place with Mali and was also one of the top scorer with five goals.

Private

Frédéric Kanouté has been a practicing Muslim since he was 20 years old. In November 2007, the star striker saved a mosque in the Andalusian metropolis from closing with a generous donation. According to a report in the newspaper ABC , the attacker from Mali provided 510,860 euros so that the Muslims could continue to have their place of worship.

Kanoute refused to play in the 2006/2007 season with a shirt that had a sports betting advertisement printed on it. The reason he gave was that his religion, Islam , forbids gambling and therefore he does not want to advertise gambling for religious reasons. The advertising on the striker's jersey was pasted over in consultation with the club and the sponsor.

Kanoute is married to Fatima and has two children with her, Ibrahim and Iman . In 2006 Kanoute opened a village for orphans in his homeland of Mali. he also took part in games for children in Africa.

In January 2009, he caused a sensation when, after scoring a goal in a cup match, he took off his shirt and showed a T-shirt that said “Palestina”. This should be a protest against the Israeli air strikes in the Middle East conflict .
