Nwankwo Christian Nwosu Kanu (born August 1, 1976 in Owerri ) is a former Nigerian football player .

Career

society

At 15 he began his career as a football player in the first division at Federation Works before moving to Iwuanyanwu National in 1992 . After a good performance at the 1993 U-17 World Cup , he was from Ajax Amsterdam 250,000 dollars bought. He made his debut in the Dutch league in 1994 , where he scored 25 goals in 54 games. Due to his good performances he attracted the attention of the big European top clubs. In 1996 Ajax sold him to Inter Milan for around $ 4.7 million. Kanu was named Africa's Footballer of the Year in 1996 .

At Inter, the medical department found him to have a heart defect. In February 1999, after only twelve games at Inter, he moved to Arsenal for $ 7.5 million . Kanu made his debut shortly after arriving in London in the FA Cup against Sheffield United . He made bad headlines in his debut game after the United goalkeeper purposely kicked the ball out to seek treatment for an injured player. When Arsenal player Ray Parlor threw the ball back to Kanu with a throw-in, the latter stormed the opposing goal without resistance and passed Marc Overmars , who sank the ball into the goal. Although after this game started under great criticism, Kanu improved his performance under coach Arsène Wenger and he was again voted Africa's Footballer of the Year in 1999. In the years that followed, the attacker rose to become one of the public favorites among Arsenal fans and delighted with impressive goals.

In 2004 he moved to West Brom on a free transfer . The reason was that he was rarely used at Arsenal due to competition in the storm. At that time Kanu was fighting behind Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp with Jérémie Aliadière , Sylvain Wiltord and José Antonio Reyes for number three striker position. At West Bromwich he was the undisputed number one storm. He made his debut for the club on August 14, 2004 against Blackburn Rovers, and the striker scored his first goal for the new team on September 18. Nevertheless, he could not avert the last place of the 2004/05 season and West Bromwich was second class again. After the Baggies were relegated , Kanu was hired by Portsmouth FC to continue playing top division football. With this team he also won the English FA Cup in 2008. In the final, he scored the winning goal against Cardiff City to make it 1-0. As a result, he qualified with Portsmouth FC for the first round of the UEFA Cup the following season . There the club prevailed against the Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães , whereby Kanu qualified with Portsmouth for the UEFA Cup. In the group stage they met the Italian Serie A club AC Milan , the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg , the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen and the Portuguese representative Sporting Braga .

In the group game against AC Milan, Kanu made it 2-0; in the end they played 2-2. At the end of the group stage, they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup (they only finished fourth in the table). In four missions Kanu was changed twice once and once; Kanu only played 90 minutes once. In the league, Kanu only played 17 times (one hit), and he never played 90 minutes here. At the end of the season, Portsmouth FC finished 14th in the table. In the following season, Nwankwo Kanu was used 23 times (two hits), this time also playing three times over 90 minutes.

At the end of the 2009/10 season there was relegation from the Premier League. After all, Kanu was able to reach the final of the FA Cup again with Portsmouth FC in the same season. This time, however, they lost 1-0 to Chelsea . In the Football League Championship Nwankwo Kanu came to 32 missions and two hits.

However, the direct ascent did not succeed; Portsmouth played the whole season only mediocre and only finished 14th in the table at the end of the season.

National team

Kanu made his debut on May 5, 1994 in a friendly against Sweden for the Nigerian national team , with which he participated in the 1998 World Cup and 2002 World Cup. So far Kanu has played 81 international matches, scoring 13 goals. He also won the 1996 Olympic football tournament with the national team .

Managerial career

Since November 2011 he has been on the board of the semi-professional football league Imo League , for which he also works as a special advisor. In addition, he founded the Kanu Nwankwo Football Academy in Owerri in Imo State in 2010 , which not only offers football training but also school education.
