Marc Overmars (born March 29, 1973 in Emst ) is a former Dutch soccer player and today's soccer official.

Career

He played in the Netherlands , England and Spain during his professional career . The left winger was also a Dutch national player . Because of his way of playing and his physical condition, his fans called him “the Roadrunner ” or simply “meep-meep” after the cartoon character of the same name .

Marc Overmars played 86 games in the Dutch national team and scored 17 goals. He played his first game for his country on February 24, 1993 against Turkey . His last game was at the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal , and the Dutch lost to the hosts in this semi-final.

Overmars began his career with the Dutch club SV Epe. He then played for the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer and Willem II Tilburg before moving to Ajax Amsterdam in the 1991/92 season.

Marc Overmars was very successful under coach Louis van Gaal at Ajax Amsterdam. He and his team won the Champions League against AC Milan in 1995 . In 1997 he moved from Ajax to Arsenal FC in England. There Overmars harmonized very well with Dennis Bergkamp and together they scored many goals. In the summer of 2000 he moved from Arsenal to FC Barcelona for around DM 45 million , where he ended his career in 2004. On June 30, 2004, Overmars played for the last time in the national team's jersey in the European Championship semi-finals. Overmars resigned from professional football on July 26, 2004. The reason for this was recurring knee pain, which he still struggles with today.

Overmars was the technical director at Go Ahead Eagles Deventer . In the 2008/09 season he played again actively for this club. In the 2009/2010 season he played again for SV Epe as a stand-by professional, and he began his career with the club from the Tweede class, zondag. He ended his career in the summer of 2010 and has been an intern in youth training at Ajax Amsterdam ever since . He has been Sports Director at Ajax Amsterdam since 2012.
