Michael Kojo Essien (born December 3, 1982 in Accra ) is a former Ghanaian soccer player .
Career
societies
He was voted France's Most Valuable Player in the 2002/03 season while playing for SC Bastia . Essien was also twice France's Footballer of the Year.
The midfielder was French champion with Olympique Lyon in 2004 and 2005 and moved from Lyon to English champions FC Chelsea for the 2005/06 season for 38 million euros . In 2007 he received the Chelsea Player of the Year Award . In September 2008 he tore a cruciate ligament . On June 4, 2010, Essien's contract was prematurely extended to June 30, 2015.
On August 31, 2012, Essien moved to Real Madrid on loan for a year .
He returned to Chelsea for the 2013/14 season . However, he received little attention in the first half of the season under José Mourinho and therefore switched to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan on January 27, 2014 , where he received a contract until June 30, 2015.
After a season with the Greek first division club Panathinaikos Athens and eight months of non-membership, Essien joined the Indonesian club Persib Bandung .
National team
With the Ghanaian national team , he took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany . With Ghana he survived the group stage against Italy, the Czech Republic and the USA. In the second round, the Ghanaians met Brazil, but without Essien, as he received his second yellow card in the tournament in the last group game against the USA and was therefore banned from this game. This meant that Ghana was weakened as Essien, along with Stephen Appiah, formed the backbone of midfield of the team which, despite their best efforts against Brazil, remained largely without a chance. Due to a knee injury that he sustained at the 2010 African Cup of Nations in January , he had to cancel participation in the World Cup in South Africa that same year .
On May 13, 2014, he was appointed to the squad of the Ghanaian national team for the 2014 World Cup .
Style of play
Essien can be used in a variety of ways in midfield, both offensively and defensively. He can also play in defense if necessary.
