Stephen Leroy Appiah (born December 24, 1980 in Accra ) is a former Ghanaian football player and current coach .
Career
society
First stop Appiah in Europe was Udinese Calcio in Italy's Serie A . In the summer of 2000 he moved to the league competitor AC Parma for the equivalent of 700,000 euros . After two average years, the 2002/03 season was followed by the loan to Brescia Calcio , where he made his breakthrough under Carlo Mazzone . At the beginning of the 2003/04 season he was signed by Juventus Turin for eight million euros. For the 2005/06 season Appiah moved to the Turkish Süper Lig for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , the amount of the transfer fee was also eight million euros. There he signed a four-year contract with an option for another year. He played his first game for Fenerbahçe on August 5, 2005 against Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Due to a complicated injury, his contract was suspended at the end of the 2007/08 season . He then kept fit at his ex-club Brescia Calcio. In November 2009, the Ghanaian international, who had been without a club until then, was signed by FC Bologna , where he was only used twice during the season. At the end of the 2009/10 season , his contract was not renewed. In August 2010 Stephen Appiah signed a contract with Serie A promoted AC Cesena for the 2010/11 season . After almost eight months of being without a club, Appiah was signed by the Serbian first division club FK Vojvodina Novi Sad in early February 2012 until the end of the season.
National team
Stephen Appiah played his first international match for Ghana in 1996 against the national team of Benin . In Ghana's squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , the midfielder and captain under coach Ratomir Dujković was one of the most experienced and important players. With the Black Stars he reached the round of 16 in the tournament in which they failed 3-0 to Brazil . In 2006 he was named Ghana's Footballer of the Year.
At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he and his team reached the quarter-finals under Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac , where they were eliminated on penalties against Uruguay . Appiah was only a substitute. After the World Cup, he announced his retirement from the national team.
As a trainer
At the soccer World Cup in Brazil in 2014 he acted as assistant coach to James Kwesi Appiah for the national soccer team of Ghana .
