Round of 16
Uruguay - South Korea 2: 1 (1: 0)
In front of only around 30,000 spectators in Port Elizabeth , the Uruguayans took the lead early on through Luis Suárez and then left the initiative to the South Koreans, who, however, acted largely unsuccessfully. It wasn't until the 68th minute that Lee Chung-yong scored to equalize. Although South Korea then had a chance of scoring the winning goal, Suárez again decided the game in favor of Uruguay with one of the most beautiful goals of the tournament.

Kevin-Prince Boateng put the Ghanaians in the lead in the fifth minute. The slightly favored Americans equalized in the 62nd minute with a penalty converted by Landon Donovan , but an Asamoah Gyan goal in the third minute of extra time gave the Black Stars victory. After Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002, this was the third time that an African team reached a World Cup quarter-finals.

Germany - England 4: 1 (2: 1)
The third round of 16 was the "classic" Germany against England . The early attacking and quickly combining German team took the lead in the 20th minute through Miroslav Klose , who after a long kick from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer prevailed against his opponent and got the ball just before goalkeeper David James . Lukas Podolski increased to 2-0 in the 32nd minute after a presentation by Thomas Müller . After a corner kick in the 37th minute, central defender Matthew Upson headed the surprising goal for England. Shortly afterwards, Frank Lampard hit the lower edge of the crossbar of the German goal with a shot from 17 meters. From there the ball jumped well behind the goal line and then back against the crossbar, whereupon Manuel Neuer caught the ball and hit it off. The referee Jorge Larrionda did not recognize the goal, however, as his linesman Mauricio Espinosa signaled him to "continue playing". The goal sparked heated public debate and memories of the 1966 Wembley goal . In the second half, Germany achieved success with goals from Müller in the 67th and 70th minutes.

The new edition of the round of 16 game in 2006 was less exciting this time. The Argentines were already leading 2-0 after 33 minutes, the 1-0 falling from a clear offside position. When Tévez increased his second goal to 3-0 in the 52nd minute, the game was in principle decided, even if the Mexicans reduced the deficit to 3-1 in the 71st minute through Hernández.

Paraguay - Japan 0-0 aet, 5-3 pi E.
The game Paraguay against Japan had very few highlights. Both teams behaved nervously and rarely played scoring opportunities, so that the game remained colorless for long periods. In addition, there was a high error rate for both teams. Paraguay had the greater share of ball possession, but this did not lead to a goal against the defensive Japanese. Likewise, the Asians of Paraguay's defense could not really be dangerous.
In the decisive penalty shootout after 120 goalless minutes, the Japanese Yūichi Komano missed , while all the South Americans scored. For the first time in its history, Paraguay reached a World Cup quarter-finals.

Spain - Portugal 1: 0 (0: 0)
In the Iberian neighborhood duel, the Spaniards once again played their dominant possession game, but Portugal held their own against it, especially in the first half, and had some good scoring chances. However, as the game progressed, the Spanish superiority increased. In the 63rd minute, David Villa scored the “Golden Goal” for Furia Roja , which, after being passed by Xavi , fell from a suspicious position.

Quarter finals
Netherlands - Brazil 2: 1 (0: 1)
After Robinho's 1-0 for Brazil , the South Americans controlled the game for a long time, but failed to push for the decision. After half-time, the Dutch got better into the game and scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 53rd minute after goalkeeper Júlio César and Felipe Melo clashed while trying to parry a long-range shot from Wesley Sneijder on goal extended the ball into his own goal. After that, the Dutch got the upper hand and increased the pressure. From a corner kick and a header relay, Sneijder made it 2-1 in the 68th minute. Shortly thereafter, Melo outnumbered his team when he first fouled Arjen Robben and then kicked the man on the floor on the thigh, for which he was sent off. The Brazilians had little to oppose the Dutch.

Uruguay - Ghana 1: 1 aet (1: 1, 0: 1), 4: 2 p. E.
In a changeable game, the Uruguayans dominated the first third of the game, but could not capitalize on it. Ghana came into the game better after that and had some chances. In stoppage time of the first half, the Africans took a 1-0 lead thanks to a long shot from Sulley Muntari . An open exchange of blows began in the second half. Uruguayan Diego Forlán took a free-kick chance in the 55th minute and converted directly after goalkeeper Richard Kingson misjudged the ball. As the game progressed, the South Americans regained the upper hand, but they didn't manage to hit another goal in regular time.
In extra time, the Ghanaians showed the greater reserves of strength, and in the last minute of the game there was a high point. The Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera could only deflect a shot on goal into the five-meter space, and the margin was blocked by striker Luis Suárez on the line. The rebounding ball would have been headed into the goal by a Ghanaian if Suárez had not fought it against the rules with an outstretched arm. However, the situation should have been interrupted beforehand because there was a criminal offside situation. After Suárez was sent off, the penalty was the last action of extra time. Asamoah Gyan , who had previously scored two penalties in the World Cup, could have shot Ghana straight into the semi-finals, but he hit the ball against the crossbar. So it came to the penalty shootout, in which Gyan took responsibility and converted the first penalty for his country with an accurate shot. However, two of his teammates shot less precisely, so that the goalkeeper was able to fend off Muslera. Sebastián Abreu converted the decisive penalty for Uruguay. With Ghana, the last African representative was eliminated from the tournament. Luis Suárez later boasted that his handball had brought the Uruguayan team to the semi-finals and was celebrated as a hero in his home country.

Argentina - Germany 0: 4 (0: 1)
Thomas Müller headed Germany into the lead after a free-kick from Schweinsteiger in the third minute. He had scored the earliest goal of this World Cup and the 200th German World Cup goal. Germany combined quickly and creatively, but Klose missed the opportunity to increase in the 24th minute. In the middle of half-time Argentina controlled the game more and more and came up with a few shots and free kicks near the penalty area. One of them was preceded by a yellow card against Müller for alleged handball, which was therefore blocked for the semifinals.
In the second half Argentina played even better and came up with several chances, none of which were absolutely necessary and which mostly ended up safely with goalkeeper Neuer. The German team now threatened to lose the thread as the number of bad passes increased. She fought her way back into the game. In the 67th minute, Müller played while lying on the ground to Podolski, who served Klose at the right time, so that Klose pushed the ball over the line to make it 2-0 in his 100th international match. At the same time this was Klose's 13th World Cup goal, with which he had overtaken Pelé in the World Cup goalscorer ranking .
A solo run by Schweinsteiger, who was later voted man of the game, into the penalty area was preceded by a short pass in front of the goal, which Arne Friedrich, the player with the most international matches without scoring, scored his first goal in his 77th international match. After a counterattack by Podolski and a cross from Özil, Klose scored his 14th World Cup goal in the 89th minute, so that at that time he was tied with Gerd Müller in the all-time World Cup goalscorer list, only behind Ronaldo (15 goals).
For Argentina, the game result was the biggest defeat against a German national soccer team .
The Uzbek referee Ravshan Ermatov rarely and safely whistled. He let the game develop. Only Müller's warning because of handball received criticism as "ridiculous" ( Jürgen Klopp ).
German and international media commented the performance of the German team as incredibly strong, splendid or outstanding. Overwhelming praise, Germany had “humiliated” Argentina ( Clarín , Argentina) and a “4-0 massacre in Cape Town” ( Terra , Brazil), it played “fast, determined and smooth” ( Lance!, Brazil) with criticism of the Argentine performance "Argentina's weaknesses exposed" ( La Nación , Argentina) and the declaration of the German national team as the greatest World Cup favorite (Lance!) . The Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet even spoke of the best first six minutes the world has ever seen. The team performance was highlighted as well as consistently positive individual performances. In addition to a 4-0 Sweden against Bulgaria in the game for third place at the Football World Cup in 1994 , the result was the highest win, up to that point, in games among the last eight teams in a World Cup since Argentina 6-0 against Peru in the second round of the Football World Cup in 1978 and up to the first semi-finals in 2014 .

Paraguay - Spain 0: 1 (0: 0)
The first half of the last quarter-finals was dominated by the favorite Spain without the Spanish team taking any action against Paraguay's compact defense. The result was “a rather boring game. Both teams acted nervously and were afraid of falling behind early. “The best chance before the break was for the South Americans: After a quick counter-attack, Nelson Valdez put the ball in the Spanish goal, but the goal was denied because Cardozo was passive offside mostly as a happy wrong decision for Spain was commented on.
After the break there was the most active phase of the game. Gerard Piqué held Óscar Cardozo's arm in a set piece in the 57th minute in his own penalty area . The fouled missed the due penalty for Paraguay. Almost in return, David Villa broke through into the Paraguayan penalty area, where he went down when Antolín Alcaraz grabbed his shoulder from behind. Xabi Alonso converted the following penalty, but because his compatriots walked into the box too early, he had to retake the penalty. This time Justo Villar parried the shot and the margin, in which the referee did not punish a foul by goalkeeper Villar on a Spaniard in the turmoil in front of the goal. The penalty for Paraguay should have been repeated because players ran into the penalty area too early, but this did not happen.
As a result, Spain dominated the game again, but the chances remained weak. Andrés Iniesta only made his breakthrough in the 83rd minute : He played the free standing Pedro , whose shot landed on the post, from there the ball jumped to Villa, who scored a so-called billiard goal: the ball went from the right post to the left post and from there into the network. Paraguay's goalkeeper was defeated for the first time in 409 minutes. Shortly before the end, Paraguay had a chance to equalize when goalkeeper Iker Casillas let a hard shot ricochet off his goal but then ran out, preventing the free-standing Roque Santa Cruz from getting the ball past him.

Semifinals
Uruguay - Netherlands 2: 3 (1: 1)
Against the Uruguayans, who mainly relied on their strong defense, the Dutch struggled in the first half. Dirk Kuyt only had a halfway dangerous chance to score in the opening quarter of an hour . Then defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst dared a long-range shot from 37 meters in the 18th minute, which fit into the far corner and put the Dutch in the lead. After that, a more open game developed without the Netherlands becoming much more dangerous. Instead, the Uruguayans' advances increased, but they did not come dangerously in front of the gate. But when the best Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán got the chance for a long-range shot, he used it and overcame the not quite happy-looking goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to an unexpected equalizer.
In the second half, when Rafael van der Vaart came on, more pressure came into the Dutch attacking game, but chances remained scarce. In the 70th minute, the top scorer of the Oranjes Wesley Sneijder dared a shot flat on goal. He was lucky that the Uruguayan Maximiliano Pereira deflected the ball right into the corner and also irritated a Dutch goalkeeper Fernando Muslera , who was in a suspicious position , so that he could not prevent the South Americans from falling back again. Only three minutes later he had to reach behind him again when Arjen Robben headed the ball into the corner to make it 3-1 after an exemplary cross from Kuyt.
After this double blow, the Uruguayans did not give up and went on the offensive. They were able to build up some pressure, but Pereira only made it after the end of regular time. Then there were dramatic stoppage minutes in which the Uruguayans put on a power play and brought the ball dangerously in front of the Dutch goal several times, but ultimately the Netherlands held onto the victory and moved into the World Cup final.

Germany - Spain 0: 1 (0: 0)
The Spanish team had more possession than the German team from the start of the game. Despite some good opportunities for Spain, the game remained goalless until half-time. In the entire first half, the German team was unable to develop a significant chance of scoring, as they did not manage to establish their attacking football against Spain in the previous games. However, the comparatively good German defensive also foiled most of the Spanish attacks for the time being.
In the second part of the game, too, the German team was unable to counter the playful excess weight in midfield. After two great chances for the Spaniards by Pedro and David Villa (59th) and the first major opportunity for Germany by Toni Kroos (70th), the decisive goal for the Spanish team came in the 73rd minute after a corner kick from the left side. Central defender Carles Puyol headed the ball into the German goal. In the closing stages, Germany tried to score with long passes into the Spanish penalty area, but were unsuccessful. Rather, the Spanish team could have made an early decision with a promising counterattack by Pedro (83rd).

3rd place match
Uruguay - Germany 2: 3 (1: 1)
Right from the start, an open match for third place developed, which was dominated by the German team in the initial phase. In the 19th minute, Bastian Schweinsteiger dared a shot from a long distance on goal, the Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera let the ball ricochet forward and Thomas Müller , who had chased after the shot, was able to score his fifth World Cup goal. After that, Uruguay increasingly took the initiative and created scoring opportunities for themselves. In the forward movement Schweinsteiger lost the ball to Diego Pérez , whereby the Uruguayans were suddenly in the majority in front of the German goal and were able to equalize through Edinson Cavani . After that, the South Americans kept up the pressure, but it was a draw until the break.
The eventful game continued in the second half and Uruguay took the lead in the 51st minute: Diego Forlán converted a direct decrease as a touchdown past his opponent Per Mertesacker and left goalkeeper Hans Jörg Butt no chance. It was also the fifth goal for Forlán at the World Cup. Germany took control of the game and immediately pushed for an equalizer. Just five minutes later, Marcell Jansen headed the equalizer with the help of goalkeeper Muslera, who jumped past the cross. After that, the German players put the Uruguayans under constant pressure and came up with more opportunities. In the 82nd minute it was Sami Khedira who came after a corner kick to the blocked ball and was able to head it into the far corner. The Uruguayans had little more to oppose; rather, the Germans had even more chances, especially through substitute Stefan Kießling . There was another great opportunity on the other side of the field in the final minute, but Forlán set a free kick from the edge of the box to the crossbar. It remained with a 3-2 victory and thus the third tournament place for the German national team.

final
Netherlands - Spain 0-1 aet
In the final, the Spanish team was able to prevail against the Dutch after extra time.
The game was marked by hardship (13 yellow and one yellow-red card) and was often interrupted because of foul play. A kung fu kick by the Dutchman Nigel de Jong against Spain's Xabi Alonso should actually have resulted in a dismissal , as referee Webb later admitted. One of the few highlights of the game in the first half was the Spanish full-back Sergio Ramos' header chance in the 5th minute.
After the half-time break, the game became more attractive. The Dutchman Arjen Robben had a chance to lead his team with a solo run in the 62nd minute, but Iker Casillas parried. Also, David Villa had a great chance, but the Spaniard could not were finished (69) of the ball despite the short distance.
In extra time, the Spaniards tried to score through combination football, while the Dutch were mainly dangerous through counter-attacks. The decisive goal came after the Dutchman John Heitinga was sent off after his second yellow card (109th). In the 116th minute, Andrés Iniesta completed a combination close to the penalty area to his second tournament goal and the ultimately decisive goal. After the goal, Dutch players protested because the goal scorer was offside on Fernando Torres's previous cross . However, Iniesta did not intervene in this situation; Rather, Rafael van der Vaart's defensive attempt involuntarily matched Cesc Fàbregas , who played the ball on Iniesta, who was no longer offside. The latter was named Man of the Match and Spain was able to win the soccer world championship title for the first time in its history with the 1-0 win.
