Hérculez Gómez Hurtado (born April 6, 1982 in Los Angeles , California ) is a retired American football player .

youth

Gómez has Mexican-American parents, he was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Las Vegas , Nevada. He started playing soccer in high school.

societies

After graduating from high school, he moved to CD Cruz Azul in the Mexican Primera División . There he was only used in the second team. Towards the end of the year he moved to the second division club Águilas Blancas.

In 2002 Gomez moved to Alacranes de Durango , who were then playing in the Primera División. In Durango, however, it was hardly considered. He left the club and moved back to the United States for the San Diego Gauchos. During his time in the USL Premier Development League , he scored 17 goals in 17 games. During a friendly against Los Angeles Galaxy , their scouts became aware of Gomez.

He moved in September 2002. In his first year for the Galaxies, he was loaned to the Seattle Sounders. After 17 games he was seriously injured. After he was allowed to play again, he moved on loan to the San Diego Sockers in the Major Indoor Soccer League . For the 2005 season he returned to Los Angeles Galaxy. He was given a development contract that allowed him to play in the MLS Reserve Division for the Galaxies. Due to his good performance and the fact that Landon Donovan was posted to the national team, he fought for a place in the first team. He scored the decisive goal in the 2005 US Open Cup final. At the end of the 2006 MLS season, he fell out of favor with the then Galaxy coach Steve Sampson . Sampson first used Gomez in midfield and then completely on the bench.

After Sampson was replaced by Frank Yallop , Gomez got his chance again and scored five goals.

On December 1, 2006 Gomez was swapped along with Ugo Ihemelu for Joe Cannon from the Colorado Rapids . He scored the first goal in the then new Rapids stadium. In September 2007, Gomez injured his cruciate ligament and was unable to play for several months.

At the end of the 2008 MLS season, Gomez joined the Kansas City Wizards .

In 2010 he played for Puebla FC in the Mexican Primera División. He scored 10 goals in the 2010 Clausura, making him the best American player to top a goalscorer list outside the United States.

After the season he was put on the transfer list and moved to CF Pachuca . He only played there for one season and then switched to CD Estudiantes Tecos .

National team

He played his first international match at the 2007 Copa America against Argentina. He was in the starting eleven for the first time in the game against Colombia.

On May 11, 2010, he was appointed to the expanded squad for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. He scored his first international goal in a friendly against the Czech Republic on May 25, 2010. A day later he was named to the final squad for the 2010 World Cup.

At the World Cup he played three of four games, and he was also on the pitch in the round of 16 against Ghana.
