Career

societies

Through the youth clubs JOS Amsterdam , FC Amstelland and FC Abcoude , Braafheid got into the youth boarding school of FC Utrecht - after all, he attracted the attention of various scouts . Previously active in the second team of FC Utrecht, he made his debut in the professional team in the 2003/04 season, for which he played 13 times in the highest Dutch league, the honor division, in his first season. In the following seasons he got more and more match practice and consequently developed into a regular player. After almost four years, 80 games and two goals scored, FC Twente Enschede secured the services of the defender in January 2007 - before the end of the season . Equipped with a contract until 2010, he succeeded in asserting himself with his new employer and maturing into the club's service provider. By the end of the 2008/09 season he played 76 times in the Eredivisie and scored one goal. He also played seven times in the national and ten times in the international cup competitions.

On June 9, 2009, FC Twente confirmed the upcoming transfer from Braafheid to FC Bayern Munich on its website . Braafheid made his Bundesliga debut on August 8, 2009 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw in the away game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim when he came on for Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 84th minute .

On February 1, 2010, shortly before the closing of the transfer list, a loan deal was agreed with the Scottish first division club Celtic Glasgow to enable Braafheid to play until June 30, 2010, as he only sporadically in the Bundesliga in the first half of the 2009/10 season was used. He made his league debut on February 10, 2010 (24th matchday) in a 2-0 home win over Heart of Midlothian . Previously, on February 7th, he had played 90 minutes in the round of 16 of the club cup competition, the Scottish FA Cup , in a 4-2 away win at Dunfermline Athletic .

For the 2010/11 season he returned to Bayern Munich. The reason he cited was a positive conversation with coach Louis van Gaal , who assured him that he would get another chance. However, Braafheid was unable to take advantage of this opportunity. After a dispute between van Gaal and Braafheid in the dressing room during the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on November 6, 2010, Braafheid was suspended and then no longer used.

On January 27, 2011, the Dutchman signed a three-and-a-half year contract with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which had already signed his national team-mate and former school friend Ryan Babel two days earlier . His debut on February 5, 2011 (21st match day) - in the 74th minute for Vedad Ibišević - ended five minutes later after an assault against Christian Tiffert ; he was sent off with a red card .

As part of a consensual lending agreement at the request of FC Twente Enschede moved Braafheid for one season until 30 June 2013 to 31 August 2012 at the Eredivisie , where he once 25 was used.

For the 2013/14 season , Braafheid returned to Hoffenheim and was transferred with Tim Wiese , among others , to the "Training Group 2", which was called by the club and trained independently of the rest of the professional squad. Since then, “Training Group 2” has had a “legendary” reputation. Braafheid left the association when the contract expired on June 20, 2014.

On August 1, 2014, Lazio signed Braafheid. On September 14, 2014 (2nd matchday) he made his Serie A debut in a 3-0 home win against AC Cesena from the start. His contract ended on June 30, 2016. In August 2016, he returned to his former club, FC Utrecht. After 13 league games, he paused from January 2018 to the end of November 2018. In December 2018, he was signed by the American second division club Austin Bold FC , for whom he played in the Western Conference in a 5-0 home game against Colorado Springs Switchbacks on June 30, 2019 (4th matchday) made his debut.

National team

Braafheid played four times for the Dutch U-21 national team and made his debut on May 17, 2006 in Doetinchem in a 2-2 draw against Germany .

He took part in the European Championship held in Portugal from May 23 to June 4, 2006 and came in the first group game , in the 1: 2 defeat against Ukraine - in the first half of the game - to his first tournament appearance. In the third group game, in the 1-0 win over Italy , he came on in the 60th minute for Urby Emanuelson . He also played the semi-final game against France , won 3: 2 after extra time , but in the final , which was won 3-0 against the first opponent, Ukraine, and led to the title, he was not used.

For the senior national team he played ten internationals and came for the first time (and over 90 minutes) on February 11, 2009, in the test international match in Tunis against the national team of Tunisia in a 1-1 draw. In May 2010 he was appointed to the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . He had his only tournament appearance in the final, lost 1-0 after extra time against the Spanish national team , when he came on for captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 105th minute .
