The 2013/14 Bundesliga was the 51st season of the top German division in men's football . It began on August 9, 2013 with defending champions FC Bayern Munich's game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-1) and ended on May 10, 2014. From December 23, 2013 to January 23, 2014, the season was interrupted by the winter break. On March 25, 2014, FC Bayern Munich secured the German championship.
The three best teams of the season qualified directly for the UEFA Champions League 2014/15 according to the UEFA five-year ranking , while the fourth-placed team will qualify for the Champions League . The teams in 5th and 6th place will take part in qualifying for the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League . Since both finalists of the DFB Cup 2013/14 were able to qualify for the Champions League via the league, seventh place this season also entitles them to participate in the qualification for the Europa League; the fifth qualified directly for the group stage.
Season course
Championship and international competitions
During the winter break of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich signed the Spaniard Pep Guardiola to replace Jupp Heynckes , whose contract ended after the triple season. In addition to Guardiola's former player Thiago from FC Barcelona, Mario Götze was signed by the most highly rated league competitor Borussia Dortmund for 37 million euros . Under Guardiola's leadership, Bayern followed up on the dominance of the previous season with a slightly different style of play and a more flexible system, after a 1: 1 against Leverkusen and a simultaneous defeat by Dortmund, they held the table lead from the 8th matchday and secured themselves on the 27th matchday, earlier than any team before, the championship title. By then, Munich had won 25 games and had drawn the remaining two games. After the 24th championship had been determined, the record champions conceded the only two defeats of the season in the following two games in Augsburg and against Dortmund. Nevertheless, FC Bayern finished the season with 90 points, missing the record set last year by just one point.
Borussia Dortmund was initially able to keep up with Bayern. BVB was the leader of the table from the 2nd to the 7th matchday and was only one point behind the eventual champions on the 11th matchday; with a defeat on matchday 13 in a direct duel against FCB, however, the gap increased. A subsequent phase of weakness - the most important defensive players were absent due to injuries, so that even the clubless Manuel Friedrich was also committed - caused Borussia to slip to the lowest place on the last match day of the first half of the season. But in the second half of the season the team found their way back to their old form and found themselves back in second place in the table from the 23rd match day, which they kept until the end of the season. Robert Lewandowski secured the title of top scorer with 20 goals in his last season for Dortmund.
After finishing fourth in the previous season, FC Schalke 04 initially fell short of expectations, whereupon the club brought the German-Ghanaian Kevin-Prince Boateng back to the Bundesliga from AC Milan , who ensures more stability in the team and in the absence of the long failed Klaas-Jan Huntelaar should serve as goalscorer. On the 7th matchday only in 14th place, the increase up to the Europa League places was achieved by the winter break. Nevertheless, coach Jens Keller came under considerable pressure again, and a possible dismissal during the winter break had already been discussed in the press. The club management trusted him, however, and thanks to the strongest second half of the club's history, Schalke was able to work its way up to third place in the table and keep it.
The Bayer Leverkusen team, for which Sami Hyypiä was the sole head coach from the start of the season, played a strong first half of the season that ended in second place with four points ahead of third and seven behind the first. After the winter break, the team played significantly weaker and was passed down to 5th place on matchday 29. After a defeat at the relegation candidate HSV (1: 2) Hyypiä was released. For the remaining games, his previous colleague Sascha Lewandowski trained the team, which was able to secure at least fourth place and participation in the qualification for the Champions League.
VfL Wolfsburg managed to confirm the positive development under coach Dieter Hecking from the previous six months. From the 10th matchday onwards, VfL occupied a Europa League place and achieved fifth place, the best result since the 2008/2009 championship season . Until the last day of the match there was even the possibility of reaching the Champions League in the event of a Leverkusen defeat.
Borussia Mönchengladbach played a surprisingly strong first run, which ended in third place in the table. Borussia could not keep this form in the second half of the season. After all, the team was able to stabilize in 8th place after the crash and ended up sixth.
After a strong start to the season with three wins at the beginning, FSV Mainz 05 fell back to 14th place on match day 9, but were able to improve into the middle of the table in the following weeks. From there on, Mainz played for the Europa League and ended the season in seventh place. Since FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, both finalists of the DFB Cup 2013/14, qualified for the Champions League through the league, this place entitles them to participate in the qualification for the Europa League.
midfield
One of the positive surprises was FC Augsburg, who started the season with two defeats after being close to relegation in the previous season. After a subsequent series of three wins, five games without a win followed, from then on the FCA scored relatively constant points, including a rather unexpected victory against FC Bayern. Seventh place was within reach until the last matchday. Eighth place at the end means the best performance so far in the club's young Bundesliga history.
After TSG Hoffenheim held the class through relegation last season, the club had little to do with the relegation battle this season. The worst position of the season was the fourteenth place towards the end of the first half of the season. In the end, TSG was consistently in the middle of the table. Remarkably, TSG made the third best attack with 72 goals, on the other hand, with 70 conceded goals, the second worst defensive; Hoffenheim was involved in three of the highest-scoring games of the season.
Hannover 96 started well with 4th place after 6 match days, but could only win one game from there until the winter break. Coach Mirko Slomka , who had previously lost all away games with Hanover, was dismissed. Under the leadership of Tayfun Korkut , Hanover has long been part of the extended circle of relegation candidates, but was still able to clear the relegation zone through a strong final spurt with 13 points from the last five games.
Promoted Hertha BSC was the table leader after the first match day and surprisingly played for the Europa League places in the first half of the season. The return series, which Hertha ended as the second worst team, was much worse. The eleventh place at the end of the season was the worst season position.
Werder Bremen was slightly better than last season. The club spent much of the season in the lower half of the table, but never got in acute danger of relegation. The worst ranking of the season was 14th.
Relegation battle
For Eintracht Frankfurt, participating in the Europa League became a challenge. While the team survived the group phase there and only suffered one defeat until they were eliminated in the second round, they were initially only just ahead of the relegation place in the league before they made it up in the table in the second half after leaving the international competition to climb. The relegation could finally be secured relatively sovereign.
The second Europa League participant in the Bundesliga, SC Freiburg, who also had to cope with the departure of several regulars, suffered from the double burden in the first half of the season and ended this on the relegation place, for which the SC initially continued to play. A 4: 1 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt on the 25th matchday turned into a liberation, the start of a strong phase. On the 32nd game day, relegation was mathematically secured.
VfB Stuttgart started the season with three defeats. At this early point in time, Bruno Labbadia was dismissed as trainer and replaced by Thomas Schneider . Under his leadership, VfB was initially able to improve, but then fell into the relegation zone. After eight defeats in a row, Schneider had to leave after the 24th matchday, for the remaining games Huub Stevens was committed. VfB now played a little better and was able to avert relegation one game before the end of the season.
Hamburger SV started the season with high expectations, but quickly lagged behind. After five games, coach Thorsten Fink had to leave, at this point HSV was in 15th place. Under his successor Bert van Marwijk , there was an upward trend, after a series of eight defeats in a row the coach was changed again. With Mirko Slomka , who continued the series of away defeats he had begun in Hanover, it was not possible to jump to a non-relegation place. Despite five defeats at the end of the season, HSV still reached the relegation place. In the relegation games against SpVgg Greuther Fürth , two draws (0: 0 at home, 1: 1 away) were enough to keep them up due to the away goals rule. With that, HSV managed to stay up with the lowest score in league history.
1. FC Nürnberg was the first team in Bundesliga history to complete a first round without a win, during which the coaching duo Michael Wiesinger and Armin Reutershahn were sacked and replaced by Gertjan Verbeek . In the five games after the winter break, four wins followed, but only another three followed and the crash to 17th place. Another coaching change from Verbeek to interim coach Roger Prinzen could not prevent the eighth relegation from the Bundesliga.
Promoted Eintracht Braunschweig, who played in the Bundesliga for the first time in 28 years, was at the bottom of the table for almost the entire season, although the team's form curve rose slightly in the second half of the season. Nevertheless, at least the relegation rank remained within reach until the end. Unlike the direct competitors in the relegation battle, Torsten Lieberknecht was undisputed as a coach.
