Europe

In 2003 Raffael moved to Switzerland, where he played for FC Chiasso until 2005 . In the summer he signed with FC Zurich . There coach Lucien Favre used him in his first season only at home games from the start, as he did not fit into Favre's defensive system away. Raffael won the Swiss championship in both seasons in Zurich . Before the Super League game against FC St. Gallen in 2006, the then 21-year-old player did not appear at the team meeting and stayed away for ten days. The FCZ believed in a kidnapping and filed a missing person report. It later emerged that he was foreclosed from the club by players' agents from Brazil because they wanted to drive up his market value.

From the second half of the 2007/08 season Raffael played for Bundesliga club Hertha BSC , where he followed his coach Lucien Favre. After the relegation of the Berliners at the end of the 2009/10 season , Raffael considered changing clubs, but stayed with Hertha and rose with her after the 2010/11 season . After the direct relegation in the 2011/12 season , Raffael finally left the club.

In the summer of 2012 there was a short interlude in the Ukraine at Dinamo Kiev , where he was loaned to FC Schalke 04 for the remainder of the season with an option to buy, despite a four-year contract . He made his debut in the “royal blue dress” on January 18, 2013 (18th matchday) in a 5: 4 home win against Hannover 96 when he came on for Lewis Holtby shortly before the end . On March 30, 2013, he scored his first of two goals for the Gelsenkirchen team in the home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

For the 2013/2014 season Raffael moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach with a contract term until July 30, 2017 . Here Lucien Favre became his trainer for the third time after spending time together in Zurich and Berlin. He made his debut for Mönchengladbach on matchday one in the 3-1 defeat against FC Bayern Munich , where he was in the starting line-up.

His contract in Mönchengladbach ran until 2020. Raffael played his last competitive game for Borussia on June 27, 2020 in the home game against his former club Hertha BSC Berlin, when he came on for Lars Stindl shortly before the end . From this he also took over the captain's armband, so that he celebrated qualifying for the Champions League as a captain farewell.
