Knut Kircher (born February 2, 1969 in Tübingen ) is a former German football referee .

Life

After graduating from high school, Kircher studied mechanical engineering at Albstadt-Sigmaringen University . The engineer lives in Rottenburg , is married and has three children. His main job is for Daimler AG , and he also gives lectures.

Kircher was a referee at TSV Hirschau and since 1997 DFB referee, from 1998 he headed games in the 2nd division.

He had been a Bundesliga referee since the 2001/02 season, and in 2004 he became a FIFA referee. He celebrated his Bundesliga premiere on September 8, 2001 at the home game of TSV 1860 Munich against 1. FC Nürnberg . The first international match under his leadership was the World Cup qualifier between Andorra and Romania . The highlight of his refereeing career so far was the 2008 DFB Cup final between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich (1: 2 a.s.). On July 23, 2011 he also directed the game in the Gelsenkirchen Veltins Arena for the Supercup between Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund .

In 2012, Kircher was voted Referee of the Year .

On August 17, 2012, it was announced that Kircher, alongside Michael Weiner, was leaving as a FIFA referee at the end of 2012. Christian Dingert and Tobias Welz were nominated as successors .

In 2015, Sky Deutschland produced the documentary Das 19. Team der Bundesliga about Knut Kircher.

On May 14, 2016, he ended his active referee career after reaching the age limit.
