Manuel Grafe (born September 21, 1973 in West Berlin ) is a German football referee .

Life

At the age of 17 he passed his referee examination in Berlin. At that time he was still playing in the youth team at Rapide Wedding . Among his team-mates was the future Croatian international Robert Kovač .

Gräfe has been a DFB referee for the Hertha Zehlendorf club since 1999 . He has been in charge of games in the second division since 2001 and in the Bundesliga since 2004 . From 2007 to 2018 he also whistled at FIFA level. He had his first Bundesliga appearance on September 12, 2004 when Hannover 96 played against SC Freiburg . His first international game was the encounter between RC Lens and Chornomorez Odessa on July 28, 2007.

Gräfe was one of the Berlin referees around Lutz Michael Fröhlich , who started the soccer betting scandal in 2005 with their ad with the DFB . Since 2000 he has headed one of 13 Berlin referee groups, the Zehlendorf / Steglitz referee training group. In the 2010/11 season, Manuel Gräfe was named Referee of the Year by the DFB . As a result, the German Football Association threatened Gräfe with his premature retirement if he spoke again in the press without consulting the association's management.
