Felix Brych (born August 3, 1975 in Munich ) is a German football referee and lawyer .

Life

Felix Brych visited the Maximiliansgymnasium Munich until graduation in 1995. He studied law and was founded in 2004 by the University of Regensburg to Dr. iur. PhD. He works at the Bavarian Football Association as head of the talent development & referee department .

Soccer

Brych has been a DFB referee since 1999 and whistles for SV Am Hart Munich . Since 2001 he has been directing games in the second division and since 2004 games in the Bundesliga . He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 2004 in the game Hertha BSC against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . So far, he has made 214 appearances in the Bundesliga (as of May 2017). In October 2003 he headed a game in the South Korean K-League , and since 2008 he has also whistled games in the Saudi Arabian League. He has been a FIFA referee since January 2007 . He made his UEFA Champions League debut in 2008 with the match between Liverpool FC and PSV Eindhoven . His first international match as a referee was the European Championship qualifier between Luxembourg and Romania in 2007 (2-0). At UEFA he was promoted to the second highest category in 2008; since the 2009/2010 season he has been a member of the elite group. After the 2012/13 season, Brych was named Referee of the Year by the DFB on June 13th .

Brych was called up for the 2012 Olympics . There he initially headed the game between Senegal and Uruguay (result 2-0) on July 29, 2012, in which Uruguay lost an Olympic soccer game for the first time. He distributed six yellow cards and one red card . In the game between Brazil and Honduras he showed eight yellow and two yellow-red cards .

Brych played on May 15, 2013 in the final of the UEFA Europa League in Amsterdam between Benfica Lisbon and Chelsea FC as fourth official (main referee was the Dutch Björn Kuipers ). As a referee, he took part in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

One of the most unusual games he directed was the encounter between SV Wehen Wiesbaden and VfB Stuttgart in the first main round of the 2007/08 DFB Cup . There Brych dealt seven yellow and four red cards. He awarded the fastest red card in Bundesliga history on the first matchday of the 2010/11 season in the game 1. FC Köln against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He sent Youssef Mohamad off after just 87 seconds for preventing a clear scoring opportunity. In the 2013/14 Bundesliga season , Brych came under fire when he finally rated a ball that landed through a hole in the net from the outside as a goal in the match between TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday nine Opponent Hoffenheim denied a normal goal, so that Leverkusen won 2-1.

On November 20, 2013, Brych led the intercontinental playoff return match between New Zealand and Mexico in Wellington , which Mexico won 4-2 and qualified for the World Cup after winning the home game at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico 5-1.

On January 15, 2014, Brych, along with his assistants Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp, was named as one of 25 referee teams for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. On May 15, 2014, he was in charge of the Europa League final between Sevilla FC and Benfica Lisbon in Turin , which Sevilla FC won 4-2 on penalties.

On May 30, 2015, Brych led the 2014/15 DFB Cup final between Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg in the Berlin Olympic Stadium together with his assistants Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp . Robert Hartmann was assigned to the fourth official.

On December 15, 2015, Brych was nominated as the only referee from the German-speaking area for the 2016 European Football Championship . This made him one of seven referees at the 2016 European Championship who were also allowed to lead matches at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Brych was entrusted by UEFA on May 12, 2017 with the management of the Champions League final between Juventus Turin and Real Madrid on June 3, 2017 in Cardiff . He was supported on the sidelines by Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp, while the Serbian Milorad Mažić acted as fourth official . Bastian Dankert and Marco Fritz were nominated as gate judges , Rafael Foltyn completed the team as a substitute assistant.

In November 2017, the IFFHS named Brych World Referee of the Year 2017.

On March 29, 2018, the man from Munich was nominated by FIFA as the only German referee for the 2018 World Cup . After only one appearance in the preliminary round, he was not nominated for another game by FIFA. In the politically explosive preliminary round match between Serbia and Switzerland (1: 2) he did not give a penalty for an alleged foul on the Serbian striker in the Swiss penalty area and was heavily criticized by the Serbian media and representatives of Serbian football after the game. In this context, Mladen Krstajić , the coach of the Serbian national team, said the day after the lost game with a view to the war crimes of the Yugoslav wars : “I would send him to The Hague . So that they make him the process as they made him us ”. For this, Krstajić was fined 5000 Swiss francs.

On July 21, 2018, Brych was named Referee of the Year by the DFB .
