Bakary Papa Gassama (born February 10, 1979 ) is a Gambian football referee .

Career

Gassama has been a FIFA referee since 2007 . At the 2012 Olympic soccer tournament , he led two preliminary round games and was appointed fourth official in the final. He also directed games at the 2012 and 2013 African Championships and in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup . In 2013 he was also scheduled for two games each at the U20 World Cup and the Club World Cup. As the first representative of his country, he led a game at the 2014 World Cup, the 2-0 of the Netherlands against Chile.

He was nominated by FIFA as the only main referee from the African Confederation (CAF) for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia .

On May 31, 2019, Gassama led the final second leg of the 2019 CAF Champions League between defending champion Espérance Tunis and Wydad Casablanca . After 60 minutes, he interrupted this when the score was 1: 0 when he wanted to have his decision on the not given 1: 1 equalization checked by video evidence and it was defective. After an hour of interruption, he finished the game. This was followed by tumultuous clashes. Tunis won the Champions League with a 1-1 draw in the first leg, in which there were already abnormalities.

In addition to his arbitration work, Gassama works as a businessman.
