France managed a narrow opening win against Australia. Mbappé had a first chance in the 2nd minute, but this was the only significant chance the favorite had in the first half. Hugo Lloris prevented a Tolisso own goal after a free kick for Australia in the 17th minute. In the second half, the video evidence was used to decide on penalties, which gave France the lead. Immediately afterwards there was a penalty for Australia on the other side after Umtiti had touched the ball above head height in an Australian free kick. In the 80th minute, Behich deflected a shot from Pogba, the ball flew to the lower edge of the crossbar and from there just behind the goal line, but with full diameter. FIFA interpreted the goal as an own goal.

Peru dominated the first half and missed a penalty shortly before half-time after a foul on Cueva and subsequent use of video evidence. In the second half, Poulsen completed a quick counterattack by the Danes for a 1-0 lead. Peru was unable to exploit numerous good equal opportunities, on the other hand, Eriksen missed the possible 2-0 in the 86th minute in one of the few counterattacks. In the end it was a narrow win for Denmark, mainly due to a strong performance by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

After a goal by the youngest goalscorer in their World Cup history, Kylian Mbappé, the French moved into the next round one game before the end of the group stage. In management mode, the Bleus let the opponent pull into their half again and again, but without jeopardizing the victory. A negative highlight was probably Mbappé's “farewell tour”, which was exhausted to the limit of what is allowed, to waste time before his replacement.
