Birkir Bjarnason had the first big chance of the game for Iceland in the 9th minute. Agüero's lead was equalized just minutes later by Alfreð Finnbogason after Caballero failed to capture a cross from Ragnar Sigurðsson. In the second half Iceland concentrated almost exclusively on the defensive, Argentina had only a few chances to score despite their superiority and over 70% possession. Messi missed the greatest chance for the winner when he failed with a penalty kick to Hannes Halldórsson.

Croatia took the lead thanks to an own goal from Etebo who deflected a Mandžukić header off a corner for Croatia. Troost-Ekong took a penalty in the second half for grabbing Mandžukić at a corner. Modrić converted this to the 2-0 final score. Nigeria could hardly develop a goal threat throughout the game.

The first half offered chances on both sides, with Acuña's crossbar being the closest to the first goal. After the break, the Croatians used a mistake by the opposing goalkeeper Caballero to take the lead. But although coach Sampaoli temporarily used his full offensive powers, the Albiceleste could not land a goal in an aggressively led game. After the Europeans took the lead in the 53rd minute, they increased to 3-0 through Modrić from 22 meters and later through Ivan Rakitić and were able to qualify early for the final round.
