Emil Hallfreðsson (born June 29, 1984 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic football player .

Career

After Emil Hallfreðsson had gone through the youth of FH Hafnarfjörður , he played for two years in the club's first team. Tottenham Hotspur noticed the Icelander and signed him in the summer of 2005. During the two years in England, Emil was only used in the reserve team, which is why he subsequently moved to Lyn Oslo . After only one game for the Norwegians, he was signed by Reggina Calcio .

After he initially got working time, this became increasingly scarce in the second season at Reggina. So he was loaned back to England in 2009 and played for Barnsley FC .

In the summer of 2010, the long-established club Hellas Verona signed the Icelander. The Veronese were playing in Serie C at that time and had a return to Serie B as their goal. The club achieved this ascent with Emil, and two years later the club achieved promotion to Serie A.

In the summer of 2016 Emil Hallfreðsson moved to Udinese Calcio .

National team

Emil went through all youth levels in the Icelandic national team. He made his international debut in the senior team in 2005 against Italy when he came on in the 78th minute.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Iceland's squad. His only appearance was as a substitute in the last third of the second group game against Hungary. The team reached the quarter-finals at Iceland's first European Championship appearance.

He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Emil was used against Argentina and Croatia in the central midfield.
