Kári Árnason (born October 13, 1982 in Gothenburg , Sweden ) is an Icelandic national football player . Kári can play both in defense and in midfield. Since 2005 he has been playing for the Icelandic national soccer team with longer breaks . At club level, he played in Iceland for Víkingur Reykjavík and at clubs in Denmark, England, Scotland and Sweden, sometimes in lower leagues. Since 2018 he has been under contract again with Víkingur Reykjavík.
Career
society
Kári started in the U-23 team of Víkingur Reykjavík and played from the 2001 season at the age of 18 for the first team in the first division , but came in the first two years only to five season games. In 2003 there were already 16 games and the club was runner-up, but failed just like a year later in the cup quarter-finals.
In 2004 Víkingur rose from penultimate and Kári moved to the Swedish cup winner Djurgårdens IF in the first Swedish league . He immediately became a champion and cup winner. In the UEFA Champions League , however, they failed in the second qualifying round against Slovak champions MFK Ružomberok . In 2006 both titles could not be defended and he moved to Denmark to Aarhus GF . The club narrowly escaped relegation in its first season there. After that it was enough for a place in midfield , but Kári was loaned to league rivals Esbjerg fB after 12 games . For the 2009/10 season he moved to the English second division club Plymouth Argyle , with whom he was relegated to the third division at the end of the season , but after the club could not hold this class either, he moved to Scotland for Aberdeen FC and played there in the first League. After only one season in which the club played in the relegation play-offs, he returned to England and played for Rotherham United in the fourth division . After the end of the season, they rose to runner-up in the third division , where they reached fourth place. This allowed them to participate in the promotion playoffs, which they successfully completed. In the following second division season , however, they narrowly escaped relegation.
He then moved to Sweden for the 2015 season and has since played for Malmö FF , the 2014 Swedish champions . With Malmö he reached the group stage in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League , but could only win the home game against Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0. In the other games against Real Madrid , Paris Saint-Germain and in the second leg against Donetsk, they failed to score and were eliminated from the bottom of the group. Things didn't go well in the league either and by the end of the 2015 season they were only fifth. On May 5, 2016, they lost the cup final on penalties against BK Häcken , a club that had never won a title before. They had led 2-0 at half-time. In the penalty shootout, he was able to convert his penalty in the tie-break, but since the next Malmö player missed while the von Häcken players were no longer naked, the trophy went to his native Gothenburg .
He returned to Iceland to Víkingur Reykjavík in 2018 via Omonia Nicosia and FC Aberdeen . For the 2018/19 season he was signed by the Turkish second division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Here he succeeded with his club the runner-up in the league and thus the direct rise.
When his contract ended in summer 2019, he left Turkey and returned to Víkingur Reykjavík.
National team
Kári never played on an Icelandic junior team. On March 30, 2005, he made his national team debut in a goalless draw in the friendly against Italy when he came on in the 77th minute. In the next game on June 4, he was substituted on for the second half. In the following six games he was then five times in the starting line-up, but was substituted each time, and one substitute. In his eighth game he also scored his first international goal: on October 12, 2005, in a 3-1 draw against Sweden in the last qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup , he scored the 1-0 for Iceland, but was later replaced.
In the first game of the Icelanders in February 2006 against Trinidad and Tobago he was not considered, but was used again in the next four games in late summer and early autumn. The next four European Championship qualifiers then took place again without him. When he was reinstated on August 22, 2007, he played for the first time over 90 minutes and then also in the following game September 8, 2007. He was then substituted once two minutes before the end of the game and once in the 24th minute. There was then an international break for almost 29 months while he played in Denmark and the English second division. After playing against Cyprus for 90 minutes on March 3, 2010, another two-year break followed while he played in the Scottish Premier League. Under the new coach Lars Lagerbäck , he was called up again in February 2012 and became a regular player and remained so even though he only played in lower-class English leagues until May 2015. He now played mostly for the full season and was used in almost all competitive games.
In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , the Icelanders were clearly underdogs, as they were the worst-placed team in their group in the FIFA world rankings . But they were able to leave the former World Cup participants Norway and Slovenia behind and only had to give way to the strengthened Swiss. As second in the group, they still had the chance to qualify via the play-offs against Croatia . After a goalless draw at home, he lost 2-0 in Croatia. He was used in eight qualifying games. He scored the 1-0 in the first game on September 7, 2012 in a 2-0 win against Norway, but was substituted in the 49th minute and then just sat on the bench four days later. In addition, he was not used on March 22, 2013 in the 2-1 win against Slovenia after he had also missed the two previous friendlies.
The qualification for the EM 2016 went even better . Again they were considered outsiders, even if they were now only the second worst team. Nevertheless, they were able to defeat the World Cup third and high favorites Netherlands for the first time on October 13, 2014 and even win the second leg in Amsterdam after this home win. In the end they had to give the Czechs first place, but on the third last day of the match they had already qualified for the European Championship finals for the first time. He was used in all ten qualifying games and was only substituted on October 10, 2015 in a 2-2 draw against Latvia after 15 minutes, but was back in the starting line-up three days later in the final qualifying game and played over 90 minutes. In the seven friendlies that followed, he was only used three times and was just as often on the bench. Only for the game on January 31, 2016 against the USA he was not taken into account.
On May 12, 2016 he was appointed to the squad for the EM 2016 by coach Lars Lagerbäck . In the squad he was the second oldest player after record goal scorer Eiður Guðjohnsen . He was part of the team and was on the starting line-up in all five tournament games. His only substitution was in the quarter-finals against France, when the Icelanders had already made the preliminary decision about the end of the tournament at halftime, when the score was 4-0. Árnason did not score himself, but set up two goals for his team.
In the group stage of the 2018 World Cup , Árnason was used in the games against Argentina and Nigeria . In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he was used in two of the four defeats. In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , it was used in eight out of ten games. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Icelanders still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
