description
A new stadium was built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Nizhny Novgorod in the historic area of the headland of Nizhny Novgorod (“Strelka”), next to the confluence of the two large rivers Volga and Oka. From here there is a view of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin , which is located on the opposite bank of the river.
The stadium stands on 21.5 hectares of land and has an area of 127,500 m². The metal structure of the roof weighs more than 11,000 tons. The facade and roof are semi-transparent. The outer facade is designed with white columns. The stadium consists of three main floors and two half floors.
The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium is modeled on a whirlpool . It has two-story grandstands. The edge of the upper tier is wave- shaped. The auditorium is surrounded by filigree columns that support the roof structure. The roof is covered as a simple mosaic in different shades of blue. The arena is multifunctional. In addition to sporting events, shows, concerts and other cultural events can be held. After the World Cup, exhibitions were held in the foyer. Some rooms under the stands were put into commercial use after the end of the World Cup.
A park, parking lots, mini football fields and tennis courts will be built on the arena property. In the arena there are special places for fans with disabilities, where there is also space for an accompanying person and prams. In addition, the stadium will be equipped with the special, wider chairs after the reconstruction. Food stalls and toilets are also set up in accordance with the standards of accessibility for people with disabilities.
There are signs in the stadium for barrier-free entrances for people with disabilities. Special elevators, ramps and checkpoint facilities serve to facilitate the movement of people with reduced mobility.
history
The Nizhny Novgorod Peninsula Pechorskije peski ( Russian Печёрские пески ) was initially planned as the location . However, the plan was abandoned because of excessive costs. In August-September 2011 the organizing committee of the soccer world championship decided on the current location.
After the start of the first work in December 2014, the foundation stone was laid in March 2015 . The completion of the World Cup venue was announced on December 25, 2017. It received approval for match operations from FIFA on March 23, 2018. It was to be inaugurated on April 15 of that year with the opening game between Olimpiyets Nizhny Novgorod and the second team from Zenit Saint Petersburg . However, not all of the spaces could be used because minor work still had to be carried out. The construction costs should be around 252 million euros, which would be 20 million more than originally estimated.
