The Harpactorinae are a subfamily of the predatory bugs (Reduviidae) from the suborder Cimicomorpha .

features

The Harpactorinae are characterized by a cylindrical postocular area on the head. The first antenna segment is elongated and longer than the head. The second antenna element is either shorter or the same length as the first. The compound eyes are further apart than the ocelli (point eyes). An apical spur is formed at the anterior end of the tibia . The hemielytres have a square or pentagonal cell in the inner area of the corium near the base of the membrane. The pronotum (pronotum) shows a constriction in some genera. The bugs reach sizes between 5 and 40 millimeters.

Way of life

The Harpactorinae are mostly found in the herb layer . They hunt various arthropods that they ambush. Most species only train one generation per year. The subfamily is represented worldwide.

Taxonomy and systematics

The Harpactorinae form the largest subfamily of the Reduviidae with more than 2000 species in around 300 genera . In Europe the subfamily is represented with 36 species from 7 genera. In North America north of Mexico there are about 50 species from 13 genera.

The Harpactorinae are divided into the following tribes (with a selection of genera):

* : Tegeini is seen by some authors as a separate subfamily Tegeinae.
