Pristhesancus plagipennis is a species of bug from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae). In English, the bugs are called Common Assassin Bug ("Ordinary Murder Bug") or Bee Killer Assassin Bug ("Bee-killing Murder Bug").

features

The yellowish-brown colored bugs are about 25 millimeters long. They have a slim stature and slim legs. In the front area of the pronotum there are two prominent humps. The wings are transparent. The nymphs have an orange-colored abdomen.

distribution

Pristhesancus plagipennis occurs in eastern Australia. Open forest areas in the east of Queensland as well as in New South Wales form the typical habitat of the bed bug species.

Way of life

The bugs live predatory on various insects and arachnids. The prey animals include the honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) and the phytophagous bugs Biprorulus bibax , Nezara viridula , Plautia affinis , Tectocoris diophthalmus and Musgraveia sulciventris . As cotton pests known soft bugs of the genus Creontiades and the cutworm the genus Helicoverpa also include prey spectrum. The breeding of Pristhesancus plagipennis and its use for biological pest control within the framework of integrated pest management is the subject of several scientific papers.
